Monthly Focus: Belonging with a Decided Heart |
Belonging with a decided heart is first and foremost accepting that we truly DO belong and are uniquely created to be exactly who we are and who we are growing to be. Step two is to make sure others know that they are also seen, heard, and valued. We can do that by intentionally seeking connection through understanding and sharing our authentic selves. When you really get to the heart of the matter, belonging is all about connection. It is not “fitting in.” That implies that we may have to bend, conform or break in order to be accepted. Belonging starts with us owning fully that we are worthy of connecting with others. |

Belonging with a Decided Heart: Belonging is fundamental to human existence. It is an extension of our need for love and security, coming only after our basic needs of food, water and shelter are met. Yet, so many organizations still think belonging is a touchy-feely buzz word, rather than an actual measure of a positive culture where the people and the business can thrive. According to a Harvard Business Review article titled “What Does It Take to Build a Culture of Belonging?” by Julia Taylor Kennedy and Pooja Jain-Link, “When companies emphasize a culture of belonging, they call everyone in, creating space in the conversation to address our shared humanity and build a bridge to greater empathy and inclusion for the groups that are the most marginalized in the workplace today.” Why is belonging so important in the workplace? Our first answer is – Humanity. Being people-centered is just the moral way to run a business. However, the benefits of having an organization that draws everyone in and creates an environment of trust are increased productivity, less unproductive friction, increased profitability, increased retention, and decreased negative interactions (The Power of Belonging, Coqual, 2020). Um, yes please! How do we create this type of belonging? See and value your people for WHO they are, not what they do for you. Take time to connect on a personal level. Share your why, your success, and your failures. Ask to and for help. Everyone needs to feel supported, as well as needed. Truly feel invested in your company’s purpose and values. If you are not feeling this, are you in the right place?
