October Meeting Details

Greetings Tucker 4-H families! The junior leaders have been working hard to plan entertaining and exciting activities for the October general meeting which will take place on Monday, October 10th at 7:00 pm at Gifford School. We have so many fun activities planned; you surely won't want to miss this meeting! As in past years, we are encouraging members to wear their Halloween costumes to the meeting! We are going to have a Halloween Carnival with lots of fun games and treats! We will also be having a chili supper after the meeting. If you signed up to bring chili or topping for your parent participation this year, please bring them to the meeting. Also, we are asking that every family bring one bag of candy to use as prizes for the carnival. All extra candy will be donated to Safe Haven, an organization that helps at-risk teens in our community. We can't wait to see all your fun costumes!

See you at the October General Meeting at Gifford School on Monday, October 10th at 7:00 pm!

Collection for Safe Haven of Racine

This month, in addition to donating candy left from the carnival to Safe Haven, we will also be collecting donations for this organization that serves at-risk youth in Racine.

They are currently in need of:

Socks and underwear: for youth ages 10-17

Pajama sets: for youth ages 10-17 (including plus sizes)

Cleaning supplies: floor cleaners, toilet cleaner, all purpose spray, pledge, etc.

First aid items: band-aids, gauze, ace bandages, etc.

Pancake Breakfast Re-Cap

We want to thank all of our wonderful Tucker 4-H families for their help in pulling together for a fantastic Pancake Breakfast!  Some fun final numbers were: 25 sheet cakes served, 80 pounds of applesauce, 17 pounds of butter, 800 syrups, 100 pounds of pancake mix, 15 gallons of apple cider, and 350-400 milks.  That's what it took to feed almost 700 people!  Even though the weather was a bit warm, the bees mostly stayed away from the syrup, and it meant we served a bit less coffee (which was good since our large coffee maker gave up that morning).  The kids went above and beyond to do their jobs well, and we received many compliments from our guests who were impressed with their hard work and friendliness.  Many thanks to the Swan family for hosting the space and we hope everyone was able to enjoy the farm a bit after all your hard work.  We have a lot of ideas about how to improve this event in the future and if you have any suggestions, we'd love to hear them so please reach out.  The kids really seemed to be having a good time every time we checked in at each station and we hope those fond memories stay with them in the future.

Junior Leader Service Project

Tucker Jr. Leaders & Parents!

For several years, the Junior Leaders and their parents have joined together to pick apples at a private apple orchard.  In past years we have picked around 25 boxes of fresh apples which are donated to the Racine Food Pantry.  We will meet this year on Sunday, September 11th at 1pm.  This exquisite orchard is located at 18000 93rd Street, Bristol, WI 53104.  The property owners prefer only older youth (7th grade and up), no younger siblings please.  Also, keep in mind that there is no bathroom on site.  It is an excellent activity and you can even bring home some of the sensational apples!

Tucker Officer Parent Meeting

After the Tucker business meeting, there will be a meeting for the parents of our current officers.

Officer requirements will be explained and we will discuss how parents can support their children in their officer roles.

County Officer Training

Each year, Racine County 4-H offers a training session for all club officers.

This year it will be on Wed. Nov. 2 (6:30-8:00).

All Tucker officers must make every effort to attend.

If you are unable to do so, we will work out another option such as presenting to the club about the duties of your office.

September Meeting Re-Cap

Our enrollment meeting in September went well. It was exciting to be starting out a new 4-H year together.

It was good to see our returning families as well as the many new families in attendance.

Many of our projects were represented in our project showcase.

Thank you to our junior leaders and project leaders for attending and bringing examples of fair projects to show interested members.

Tucker School Connection

Mr. Bob Nyholm is the owner of the former Tucker School where our club first began.  The school building is located on the SE corner of County Rd. V and Spring St.  The original school was built in the late 1800's and was added onto over the years.  Mr. Nyholm attended the school when he was a kid for around 5 years, his family lived across from Haban Park on Spring St.  The school closed in the 1970's and Mr. Nyholm is only the third owner.  After he purchased the school in 1979, he completed renovations that turned it into a house.  For many years now he has used it for his business, Nyholm's "Pop-N-Good" Popcorn.  His father started the business by selling popcorn that he had grown at the farm on the SW corner of Hwy V and Kraut Rd.  Before using the old Tucker School for his popcorn business, Mr. Nyholm said it was haunted.  When he used it as a residence he heard voices of kids laughing, doors randomly slamming shut, lights turned on and off, and a vintage console record player starting to play music even though it wasn't plugged into the wall.  Although things are quieter now, he still has a lot of fond memories of playing baseball in the field behind the school, going from an outhouse to an indoor bathroom, and of all the great families in the neighborhood around the Tucker School.  We want to thank Mr. Nyholm for allowing us to put our pancake breakfast banner on the corner in front of the old Tucker school where our club began.
