Experimenting with New Media

Hi Everyone,

A lot has happened since I last wrote to you, so I would like to show you some samples of my creative journey from the last few months. As you may know I have taken Illustration courses, and my professors introduced me to an assortment of materials in the process.

Here is one of my abstract ink environments. I was going for a murky and dismal atmosphere. The spotty texture is a blend of salt and wet-on-wet splatters. I kept the paper wet as I applied more concentrated ink.

At first I thought I would turn this into an underwater scene with lots of seaweed, but instead a forest fire emerged. The two brightest areas of flame make the central trees stand out as the focal point.

I also took online workshops to try my hand with dry pastel. I was drawing with dusty rectangular sticks that forced me to loosen up the level of detail. This was a new medium for me, and I used it to practice drawing this sunset and a bouquet of tulips from photos taken by my instructor, Cathy Lorraway.

The following week, I used the techniques she was teaching to create a luminous scene of the Isle of Wight’s shore on black paper. This was based on a photo I took one early morning when my fellow camp coaches and I boarded a ferry to the British mainland.

Please make sure to add my new email address to your contacts, as I have more news to share with you soon that I know you will be glad to read (and watch). Thanks for your support and encouragement.

Sincerely,

George
