Mortgage Lifter to Poverty Pork

"Mortgage lifter" is a term credited to pigs in the bygone days of rural America. Often times pigs could turn a profit for the farmer when nothing else would. Pigs are the ultimate up-cycler of nutrient. Farmers could raise them on pastures and woodland, feeding them extra vegetables, excess milk and farm grown grains. In effect turning these unusable, unsalable or excess feed stuffs into healthy, flavorful, and valuable pork. It's little wonder that most every farm had pigs for much of our nation's history. Sadly, it didn't last!!

Enter the era of poverty pork!!!

Big business has a habit of ruining most everything it touches. As the big players in the pork market cemented their monopoly of the pork processing industry, the options for these small independent farmers evaporated. The prices that were forced on them by the very few buyers in the market no longer covered even feed cost. Gone are the profits to help small farms survive, gone are the varied diets that made flavorful, healthy pork and gone are any semblance of a natural environment for the pigs themselves. Poverty pork is all I can think to describe the financially, ethically and nutritionally bankrupt state of commodity pork on offer at the local supermarket.

Returning pigs to their "Mortgage Lifter" status!!

The ability for pigs to upcycle farm nutrients hasn't changed. The benefit of outside housing, natural environment and wholesome feed hasn't changed. The consumer demand for a flavorful, juicy, health pork hasn't changed but what they've been offered definitely has fallen short. When's the last time you got excited about throwing a pork chop on the grill?

Our farm, like many others around the country have taken up the challenge of restoring the lowly pig back to its former status as a "Mortgage Lifter" on the farm. We cannot compete with corporate pork to make the soulless stuff they're selling, but we can get back to the basics and produce a far superior product that folks can actually get excited about!! Heritage breed pigs raised on varied pastures and fed a natural diet of non-GMO, organic grain produces an amazing quality pork that we imagine must be like what pork used to be.

Help us renegade pig farmers show corporate pork we don't need their permission or approval to exist. As long as we have customers that believe in what we do and support us, we can continue to buck the system and deliver a premium pork that's healthy, ethical and delicious!!

We have processing dates next week for pigs. If you'd like to stock the freezer with a whole or half ahead of grilling season, click the link below to reserve yours.
