Newsletter October 24, 2022 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

"As long as everyone got a chance to talk, the team did well. But if only one person or a small group spoke all the time, the collective intelligence declined."

This was a takeaway from a 2016 study cited in the New York Times (article HERE). I was struck by how it describes so well the deeply held value of our Keeping It Sacred programs. In the KITS community, we value balancing the "air time" and ensuring that everyone participates -- time and time again, we have seen how being intentional about how we share vocal space brings new layers of understanding to the texts, and our experiences of ritual and other programming. We call this the "step up/step back method."

The "step up/step back method" encourages those who consider themselves more introverts, those who think much before sharing their thoughts, to challenge themselves to "step up" to share. And those who are more extroverts, who talk and through talk formulate their thoughts, are encouraged to challenge themselves to "step back" to allow others to share as well.

Collectively, we know we each hold responsibility for maintaining the community's culture by self-monitoring. And, creating this kind of culture helps, as the New York Times article describes, create a kind of psychological safety. And for a spiritual community to offer a place of psychological and spiritual wellness in this way, is critical to our fulfilling our mission.

Many of you appreciated last week's newsletter article where I described how the Jewish concept of tzimtzum, the process of stepping back to allow others space, inspired you.

We may not always be perfect in monitoring how much we share (I know I get excited and want to share a lot from tradition), but each of us who enter the zoom space commit to creating this kind of safety. Also in the article, a researcher shared that a psychologically safe team is, ‘‘a team climate characterized by interpersonal trust and mutual respect in which people are comfortable being themselves.’’

I am inspired by the ways participants have brought their full selves to our conversations by sharing insights based on personal stories, and the way each also served to cultivate mutual respect by making space in order to encourage participation among the group. May we continue to hold up the step up and step back value dear, and always be encouraged to step into the sacred space we create together.

Truly, together, we're #keepingitsacred...

MAZAL TOV, ZACH & FAMILY!

The entire Keeping It Sacred wishes a hearty Mazal Tov to Zach and his whole family on the celebration of his Bar Mitzvah this past Shabbat! He chanted the morning prayer service, his Torah portion, and Haftarah absolutely beautifully, and wowed us with his exposition on the creation of the universe (6 days or evolution?) including thoughts on Rav Kook (who lived at the time of Darwin) and Rabbi Bachya Ibn Pakuda (12th c. Spain). It was a morning of intellectual contemplation, spiritual uplift, and a lot of heart!

MAZAL TOV, JULIA & BAR!

The entire Keeping It Sacred community wishes a hearty Mazal Tov to Julia and Bar who wed yesterday in a stunning setting in the Pacific Palisades.  Friends and family gathered in person from all over Israel, California and everywhere in-between. During the ceremony, they were wrapped in the the love of their parents who wrapped them in the groom’s grandfather’s tallit. Our KITS community also wraps them in well wishes and the best prayers!

THE POETIC VOICES OF THE HOLOCAUST

Through the Poetic Voices of the Holocaust, poet Ronni Rose will breathe life in the dramatic readings of those who perished and those surviving the Holocaust. Out of the darkness of inhumanity, they found words for an experience devoid of humanity and created in their poetic images humanity. The poetry of the children of the Terezin concentration camp preserved in the book I Never Saw Another Butterfly and the poems in the definitive Holocaust Anthology Art From The Ashes, of Nelly Sachs, Abraham Sutzkever, Paul Celon and Miklos Radnoti will be dramatically read with background and analysis presented.

Ronni Rose is a poet who has given professional poetry readings throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Colorado. She developed and taught a poetry course for children, The Poetic Expression Through Nature, Sensory Experience, Music and Art and has presented The Poetic Voices of the Holocaust in synagogues and an event space in Central New Jersey. She directs an Adult Education Film Series for Temple B’nai Shalom where she has presented programs for years as Adult Education Chair. She has been a jazz director for over a decade of major venues in New Jersey presenting the leading performing and recording jazz musicians of Europe, Asia, the United States and Brazil. Ronni Rose is a progressive activist, spiritual and celebrates life through nature. Please save the date for November 9 at 10am PT/1pm ET.

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

THIS THURSDAY AND EVERY THURSDAY! Ever want to jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old? Now you can! Join us as we study a page of Talmud every day, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

Currently, we are 100 members strong from 34 different states and 11 countries!

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

Lay leaders

Retired people

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.

Keeping It Sacred programs are free for all because we uphold the value of keruv/accessibility; voluntary financial contributions to help offset the cost of these programs are greatly appreciated.

To join and of these gatherings, please register HERE. Also, DM Rabbi Miller on Facebook HERE to be added to the closed, secret group where we question and discuss. And look for us on Instagram daily HERE.
