Newsletter August 1, 2022 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

Baseless hatred, also known as "sinat chinam" is the reason why the Second Temple was destroyed in the year 70 CE according to the Talmud. This suggests that people just went around carrying hatred in their hearts. And for this reason, the Talmud (Yoma 9b) insists that this kind of sin is akin to the three most serious of sins: idol worship, forbidden sexual relations, and murder.

My colleague, Rabbi Ruth Adar, likes to translate "sinat chinam" as "useless hatred." And, when people walk around with hatred in their hearts, it does have grave consequences. For example, this week, I experienced two instances of baseless hatred. One: someone shared with me hate-filled stereotypes against Asians. And two: I received hate email trying to shame us for hosting human rights activist, Patrisse Cullors. The email was laden with false accusations and a threatening tone with no room for discussion. The person had never met me, nor did they want to hear anything about why we had invited this speaker to share insights and wisdom with our community. Instead hatred was just flung in our direction. Useless hatred. Baseless hatred. But nevertheless hate speech that I will have to take seriously. And this particular kind of hatred, that aims to pit the Jewish and Black communities against each other (as if there weren't Black Jews, BTW!) will only result in one outcome: white supremacy wins. Now, that is truly a chilling idea based on the murderous actions that have come from supremacist ideologies. As our tradition has stated, sinat chinam leads to death, the way that infighting led to the destruction of the Second Temple.

The Torah teaches us a very useful way to avoid the sin of baseless hatred. We should say something if it is bothering us before it cascades into hatred.

It begins with the verse immediately before the "Golden Rule" of Leviticus 19:18 commanding us to "וְאָֽהַבְתָּ֥ לְרֵעֲךָ֖ כָּמ֑וֹךָ/love your neighbor as yourself;" there is verse 19:17 which warns us "לֹֽא־תִשְׂנָ֥א אֶת־אָחִ֖יךָ בִּלְבָבֶ֑ךָ/You shall not hate your kinsfolk in your heart." Torah is teaching us: do not harbor hatred in your heart. Do not succumb to these dark sentiments, because they do indeed lead to murder. Rather, the verse says, you shall surely rebuke the person-- that is, we should speak our mind and share how we feel and that should help us not harbor the kind of resentment that leads to hatred. Essentially, we should be a people who talks things through. And that will lead to love of our neighbor.

What the author of that hate-filled email recently flung in my direction had was impeccable timing. This is the week that concludes with the sad holiday of Tisha B'Av/ The 9th of Av, where we are remembering with great sadness, the destruction of the Second Temple. This is precisely the time of year that our tradition combats useless hatred. And so should we. At this time of year, and always. And we are. With love. Dialogue. And sacred conversations. (see the photo below of our beautiful conversation)

THE MAKER: A POEM FOR TISHA B'AV

The Maker

by Rabbi Heather Miller

One day,

out of the blue,

I began to contemplate

The life of a maker

Of gravestones.

The one entrusted

with the sacred responsibility

To etch into cold stone

The memory of a loved one lost.

With each drive of the hammer,

And sharp steel chisel

To bring memories

Of flesh and blood

Human experiences

And soul connecting interactions

To mind.

And to mark the spot

Where the destination on the

pilgrimage to remember

Ends.

And where the grief lives.

Where together, we cry.

The scribe of sacred texts follows a similar path

To help the people remember

Legends of old.

Tests of the human spirit,

Forever memorialized in ink on klaf.

And for the book of Aicha,

Lamentations,

Read religiously,

Ritualistically,

On Tisha B'Av.

A holding space for communal grief.

Readings to make space for

This most precious feeling

Of loss and mourning.

A place on a page

Where we gather around

And remember and wail.

About not only the destruction

Of the first temple

Or that of the second temple

Or that of other calamities that have befallen us

But the words have become

A monument we lift up to

Moan

For what could have been and the loss of

What was supposed to be.

And of the useless hatred that continues.

This holiday comes before the holiday

Celebrating what might yet be in the new year-

A time to process and purge the sadness

To make way for new seeds of hope to be planted

In due time.

But first we set out to mourn.

Hammer and chisel in hand,

Staring at the dark blank tablet before us.

How will we remember today?

And what room will we make,

For new seeds to take root,

And grow?

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.
