Tomato Daily ½ Acre Newsletter Vol. 5

Hi Everyone!

Excuse our little hiatus from sending out these newsletters, but we've been going through a bit of burn out as we transitioned from the incredible heat straight into the smoke season (no surprise there...) All-in-all though, this have been going really well up at the farm. We work early mornings and late nights and we are definitely enjoying ourselves.

Now ... Three important points to share right off the bat:

1. This is a reminder to get your orders in for Harvest Box pick up coming up for Thursday! Email us by Wednesday and midnight and we will have your orders ready for you. :-)

2. To reflect new crops that we have coming in, we are going to be putting a slight increase to our prices. For this week going forward we will be asking $30 for a Single share and $40 for a Full share.

3. On a more fun note - you can also now find us at the Lake Country Farmer's Market! The Market is from 3 pm - 7 pm at Swalwell Park 10090 Bottom Wood Lake Road, Lake Country.

We were there last Friday just to try things out and we had so much fun that we will definitely be going back! If you're a local to Lake Country, please feel free to stop by and say hey!

Okay, now onto some specifics about the this week's crop..

This weeks items include:

Cucumber, Hot pepper, Tomato, Carrots, Summer squash (zucs & patty pans), Fennel, salad Turnips (sweet and milky), Beets, Kohlrabi, Swiss Chard, Kale, Radishes.

Summer Squash

Marinated summer squash with hazelnuts and ricotta….. I found this recipe a couple years ago when I grew a few too many squash plants in my home garden. The marinade just transforms the zucchini into the most juicy flavourful version of itself. https://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/marinated-summer-squash-with-hazelnuts-and-ricotta

Fennel

Probably the crop that I get asked about the most.. so I reckon I might keep my mouth shut and just recommend you just play with this super versatile vegetable.  All you need to know is that it's one of my favourites, and with that I'll leave you with a recipe that is one of the main staples in my house: One Skillet Chicken with Buttery Orzo

Kohlrabi

I need to talk more about how much I love kohlrabi, the flavour is a mix of daikon, radish, and broccoli stalk that is so crunchy and juicy fresh, I made a big veggie platter this past weekend and cut the kohlrabi into thick sticks, sprinkled some salt on top and made a simple herb dip on the side, ¼ cup mayo, ¼ cup sour cream, lemon juice, fresh chopped tarragon and basil, salt and pepper to taste.

Cucumber

So funny story with our cucumber plants this year. We randomly choose a couple cucumbers to grow (just grabbed off the shelf at Buckerfield's) this year and the one looked like your average run of the mill 'cuc' but once it started producing we were in awe of it. It's an Armenian Long Cucumber, which is technically not even a cucumber at all and is instead a melon. Apparently they are burpless (cucumbers make many folks burp?!?!) and they are very heat tolerant, and not prone to bitterness! And you don’t have to peel the skin… endless pros to this variety. Not to mention DELICIOUS. Stumbled across a gem here...

Anyways, a bit more brief from us this week. Don't forget to get your orders in by Wednesday night and we'll see you Thursday, or even Friday at the Lake Country Farmers Market!
