2023/24 AIR Fellow Shantré Pinkney will be exhibiting their photo-fiction book Raw, Black & Blue, at Kala Arts Gallery for their opening reception celebrating the 2023-2024 Media Arts Fellowship artists. Raw, Black and Blue tells a love story through the lens and journals of Tamia, a photographer navigating her relationships and mental health upon returning to her childhood home.

This intimate concert features Tatsu Aoki (Asian Improv aRts Midwest), iconic Chicago bassist, filmmaker, shamisen performer, and Japanese culture bearer as part of San Francisco Japantown’s annual Japan Week Festival. Joining Aoki will be taiko sensei and Genryu Arts founder Melody Takata, saxophonist Francis Wong, and bassist and music researcher Noah Rosen. This event is part of Japan Week Festival taking place July 14-21 in SF Japantown. Admission is free, RSVP recommended.

If you missed the 2023/24 AIR Fellow Erika Oba's live album release last month, you can listen to digital album of Ghosts On the Water on Bandcamp. The album features Erika Oba - piano, Chris Bastian - bass, Jeremy Steinkoler - drums, and special guest vocalist Roopa Mahadevan on this an 8-track compilation of songs themed around ecology, ritual, and heritage.
