"Parbati Hansdah: From Rugby Dreams" |
Parbati Hansdah grew up in the lush green landscapes of Baripada,Odisha, amidst the toil of her parents, who worked tirelessly as farmers. From a young age, Parbati harbored a fiery spirit that yearned for more than the traditional roles typically assigned to girls in her village. While other girls were content with household chores and domestic duties, Parbati found solace and passion in the rugged game of rugby.
Despite her love for the sport, Parbati's journey was not without its share of challenges. With limited resources and a lack of proper infrastructure, she struggled to find a platform to nurture her talent. There were no proper grounds to practice, and financial constraints made it difficult for her to venture beyond her district to compete. However, Parbati refused to let these obstacles deter her dreams.
Her parents, initially skeptical of her pursuit of rugby, feared for her safety and future prospects in a society that often frowned upon girls participating in such physically demanding sports. However, Parbati's determination knew no bounds. With the unwavering support and encouragement of her coach, Dibyaranjan Sir, she persevered, slowly winning over her father's apprehensions with promises of her safety and assurances of her burgeoning talent. |
Her breakthrough came when she represented India in both the U-18 and U-20 Asian Rugby Cups, showcasing her talent on an international stage and bringing pride to her nation. Though she fell short of clinching the championship titles, her achievements reverberated far beyond the rugby field, inspiring countless young girls to embrace their passions and break free from the shackles of societal expectations. As she strides forward, Parbati's dreams extend beyond personal glory. She envisions a future where girls from her village and beyond have the opportunity to pursue their passions fearlessly. With her sights set on becoming an English teacher, she aims to inspire and empower the next generation, just as rugby has empowered her.
Parbati Hansdah, the fearless girl from Baripada, Assam, stands as a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and the unwavering pursuit of one's dreams, no matter the odds. |
