Cultura

Parks and walks are a central part of life in the hispanic world. Going for an afternoon or evening walk is a normal daily event. It is such an important part of the culture that there is a Spanish verb, “pasear”, that means “to take a walk”. The photo here is of El Parque Forestal in Santiago, Chile. A walk through this long narrow park will take about an hour as you pass many of the main sights in the city. See more from SantiagoChile.com in the Link. (Photo by Christine Page)

Chilean Wine - Chile started producing wine with the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century and is now the 7th largest producer of wine globally. Vineyards thrive in Chile with a climate similar to California. Some of the most popular grape varieties grown are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Carmenére all of which were introduced to Chile in the 19th century from France. So next time you are shopping for a nice bottle of wine, check out offerings from Chile!

Empanada de Pino - Empanadas are popular throughout Central and South America. You can use a variety of fillings and either fry or bake them. Often they are the first course to a typical meal. In Chile, the filling, "Pino" is a combination of onions, meat, and a hard boiled egg.

Santiago, Chile - Arte Urbano

Santiago Chile Street Art (arte urbano) - Santiago is known for beautiful and colorful street art and murals. Thank you to Christine Page for this photo from her recent stay in Santiago. Also, check out the article from Chile Travel. Among other things, they mention how National Geographic named Santiago one of their “Must-Sees” in 2018 because of the wonderful street art.

Autores

Pablo Neruda is one of my favorite poets. My daughter Kim recently visited his house in Santiago, Chile and took this photo. Neruda won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971 and died in 1973. He is known for his love poetry (we read Sonnet XVII at our wedding), but he also wrote about the human condition and much more in collections such as Residencia en la Tierra (Residence on Earth), Odas Elementales (Elemental Odes), and Canto General.
Check out a good summary of Neruda's life by the Poetry Foundation with the link below.

Las Mañanitas

Las Mañanitas birthday song - I recently celebrated my birthday (cumpleaños) and that morning my wife said, “What is going on outside with so many birds singing!” I said, “They are singing for my birthday.” This made me think of Las Mañanitas, the traditional birthday song in Spanish. One verse says, “wake up my dear wake up, look dawn is here, the birds are already singing (Ya los pajaritos cantan), the moon has gone away.” You can listen to the complete song sung by Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán in the link below.
