It’s Mental Health Awareness week 2024 and this year’s theme is ‘Moving more for your mental health’. Physical activity is known to improve mental health, reduce stress, and boost your mood which is why farm volunteering is SO beneficial. Whether it’s mucking out the donkey’s or spending a day gardening on our allotment, you’re always moving and improving your wellbeing. Some of our young volunteers recently told us some of the reasons they love coming every Saturday to volunteer - “I’m more social and don’t have to mask my autism” - “Attending workshops, making new friends & talking to people has helped my confidence increase” - “Whenever I’m with the animals I’m calm. I don’t like speaking to people but I can speak to the animals. That makes me happy” - “My confidence has gone up since coming to the farm because when I’m unsure they help me. This month we'll be planting sunflower seeds and doing sunflower arts and crafts, as well as making mud pies and potions in our mud kitchen. Join us for this week's Green Skills session this Friday 10th May and be a part of improving your neighborhood. This time, we're focusing our efforts on sprucing up the lane next to Cadle Primary School with a community litter pick. While the kids are safely in school, why not take the opportunity to join us for a few hours of environmental action. Our meeting point is at 9 am on the lane that runs along side Cadle Primary School (see map), where we'll kick off the day's activities. But that's not all! After a fulfilling morning of tidying up, we'll be moving to an afternoon of exciting environmental activities on Cadle Heath, right behind the Farm in time for the school pick up. After a whirlwind couple of weeks, we're taking a moment to bask in the glow of it all. Our Big Give fundraising week was an astounding success, thanks to the unwavering support of our community members. But the highlight might just be our first ever Farm Gala, where our team swapped overalls for elegant attire, courtesy of the generous folks at BNI - Dylan. The evening was a dazzling affair, complete with delicious cuisine, great entertainment, and very spirited auctions and raffles. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of attendees and sponsors, we raised an incredible £6712 during the evenings events! And with match funding from our campaign, this helped our total reach our amazing total of £18,178. Incredible! A heartfelt thank you is also in order for the High Sheriff of West Glamorgan 2024-2025 for attending. Her admiration for our farm's work was apparent, and we're thrilled to welcome the High Sheriff to the farm for some hands-on volunteering very soon. Special kudos to BNI member diyinnovation for capturing the evening's magic through his beautiful photos. Please come along and bring your broken household items, jewellery, bikes, computers and more to see if our amazing volunteer team can mend them for you. It's all part of the 'City Nature Challenge' where cities around the world will be collaborating and sharing observations of nature. Join us from 10:30am - 1pm as we explore the Farm and Cadle Heath for interesting wildlife, right on our doorstep. Bring the kids and enjoy some pond dipping, bug hunts and guided walks. It's a great way to learn about nature and have fun all at the same time! No booking necessary. The event is free to attend but donations are welcome.
