THE WIND IN OUR SAILS

“A sailing program serving Pittsburgh area high school students and others”

NEWSLETTER AT A GLANCE:  Our fleet of RS Quest sailboats are now under cover and equipment is stowed away for the Winter. Even so, our work continues in the off-season.

  • Parents, sailors and friends pitched in to put our sailboats and equipment away for the Winter. A big thanks to everyone who helped out!

  • An anonymous Amazon Charitable List purchase (see link below) of learn-to-sail books is greatly appreciated.

  • Outreach to Carnegie Mellon University could result in a new college sailing program in Pittsburgh.

  • A briefing sponsored by the Port of Pittsburgh Commission for Pennsylvania State legislators provided an opportunity to talk about the Point of Pittsburgh Saling League.

Our contributors put "The Wind in our Sails".  Please see the contribution links at the bottom of this newsletter and consider making a donation to support high school sailing in Pittsburgh. And also check out the link below for a video on the PPSL sailing program.

Many hands make light work

While it's sad to see the end of the sailing season, everyone pitched in on October 22nd to put our sailboat and equipment away for the long Winter ahead making it a lot easier to take.

We really appreciated parents, sailors and friends who helped out on a sunny and unseasonably, but very welcomed, warm late-October Saturday.

PPSL Maintenance Chairman Geoff Wells did a great job leading the effort. Our volunteers are pictured sitting on our sailboats covered up for the Winter (left to right) Nathan Davidson, Silas Davidson, Kai Roth, Alex Smotrov, Jason Roth, Nat Green, Conner Berry and Goeff Wells.

Sailing book donation

We were pleased to receive an anonymous donation through our Amazon Charity List of five Learn- to-Sail Right! books.

Published by the US Saling Association, the beginner's sailing book is used by sailing programs across the country to help new sailors learn the basics of sailing. It also includes information on how to observe changing weather conditions to promote sailing safety.

Please consider making a purchase for the Point of Pittsburgh Sailing League through the Amazon Charity List link provided below. Or consider making a donation (see donation link below) to support our effort to provide a no-turn-away sailing program for Pittsburgh area high school students.

Outreach to establish a sailing program at CMU

While the first priority of PPSL is high school sailing, we responded to Carnegie Mellon University Explorer’s Club request on their interest in sailing and the potential of establishing a sailing program for CMU students.

Chairman Joe Kirk met with interested students on two occasions with more sessions planned over the Winter. Hats off to Explorer’s Club President Maelle Atlantic for leading the effort. More to come in the future on this new initiative.

With the support of PPSL, University of Pittsburgh students developed a sailing program in 2011. The Pitt sailing club is based at Lake Arthur north of Pittsburgh and has a fleet of sailboats funded by the university.

PPSL included in legislative briefing

The Point of Pittsburgh Sailing League was represented at an October 13th Port of Pittsburgh Commision (PPC) legislative and Industry cruise on the Gateway Clipper. The event included a briefing for State legislators and staff on a range of water infrastructure needs and the economic importance of commercial and recreational uses of our area rivers.

A river cruise, that was part of the event, passed by the PPSL amphitheater location. Our fleet of sailboats was clearly visible to the State elected officials and staff. A number of legislators were very interested in hearing about our sailing program. PPSL chairman Joe Kirk (right side of photo) was asked to provide brief remarks on river sailing and safety measures as one of a number of presentations on area river-related recreation programs.

Representatives of the commercial boating industry at the meeting concurred that the PPSL safety procedures have worked well. They appreciated the communication with commercial vessels. A Gateway Clipper representative also noted that passengers enjoy seeing and photographing sailing on our rivers.

We really appreciate the invitation to the briefing by Port of Pittsburgh Commission and PPC Executive Director May Ann Bucci and inviting us to offer remarks at the event.
