A thousand years ago, Rashi acknowledged: “there is no road without twists.” 

The midrashic work, Sifrei Devarim, expands on this idea saying, “There is no road without turnings; there is no road without traps; there is no road without branchings.” 

This is a great metaphor for life. Work life. Family life. Love life. 

We don’t always know where the road will take us. Sometimes it is rocky and sometimes smooth. Sometimes it twists and turns and brings us back to where we started. But every day on the path is a blessing if we attune ourselves to the beauty around us. 

Of course, that’s easy for me to encourage – I’m a journey person. What if you’re someone who focuses on the destination? Well, we can all remember that life is hard and systems are not often kind to the flesh-and-blood human being. Every new step on the road of life is an accomplishment. Every day on the road is a win. And it is all the more enjoyable with good company. 

Though these past couple of years have thrown some pretty big twists and turns and bumps at us, building the Keeping It Sacred community with you has been a great source of beauty along the way. A thousand years ago, Rabbi Bachya Ibn Pakuda decided to pull sacred texts about exceptional character qualities together. He felt this would be a useful tool to inspire people to live lives of meaning. He called his work Duties of the Heart, and it is the work upon which the Mussar Movement is based. The book is available for free on Sefaria.org, and we will take time each week to study teachings and explore how we might make sense of them in our lives today.

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

Ever want to jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old? Now you can! Join us as we study a page of Talmud every day, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along. 

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.
