A few of the holiday cards that our chapters sent to each other for our Sister City challenge!

Flat Athena

With the Holiday season come and gone, I am ready for my next adventure! I have enjoyed the time spent with my Chicago sisters, and I am looking forward to my return to the Big Apple! While in Chicago I participated in giving back to the local community, and want to continue to do so. If any of my sisters are planning any types of philanthropic work, I would love to be there to help out. Remember to reach out to me on Instagram @FlatAthena, so that my travel agent Grand Governor Rigo can book my ticket!

Fundraising & Philanthropy

This year the Maids of Athena and Sons of Pericles are continuing to raise money for the JED Foundation, which is a non-profit organization that works to protect emotional health and prevent suicide in teens and young adults. They partner with high schools and colleges to strengthen mental health initiatives, tackle substance abuse, implement suicide prevention and offer support during transitional periods.

We are continuing to sell our $20.00 raffle tickets this year in support of this project. Please contact moagrandlodge@gmail.com for more details on our national project.

We will also be selling T-Shirts to raise money for the JED Foundation. T-Shirts will be pre-sold for $30 (including shipping). The pre-sale has been extended to February 1st! If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact our National Project Chair Grand Treasurer Maria at moagrandtreasurer@gmail.com.

MOA Horoscope

Capricorn
December 22 – January 19
Today is an inspirational day for you, fast thinking Capricorn. Let those visions come to you, process them, and try to verbalize them. A lot of information and electricity is in the air, and you should have no problem picking up on it. Open up your channels for the best reception. Have a notepad handy to jot down all your insights.

Aquarius
January 20 – February 18
You're usually good at bringing people together. Your greatest strength is giving identity to those people who seek it. In fact, you're so aware of the differences between people that you resist the changes that come about as people evolve. Today's planetary alignment confronts you with issues that concern your future. Your position will help you accept things and go forward.

Pisces
February 19 – March 20
Some of you still let individuals from other Zodiac signs do all the creating for you. The planetary configuration today pushes you to free yourself from the ties that bind you. It's time for you to show more creativity. Show the gems that you usually hide. Express yourself fully, without hesitation. Show others who’s really in charge.

Aries
March 20 – April 19
You are very interested in all kinds of professions that concern humans, Aries - medicine, psychology, or any kind of spiritual therapy. You will be very sensitive to the great opening toward the future that comes along today. The planetary alignment initiates progress in all areas of human existence. Keep your eyes and ears wide open.

Taurus
April 20 – May 20
You may surprise the people around you over the next few days. You're a responsible person and others can count on you. But just like anybody else, you're sensitive to your desires. You should expect your desires to be so strong today that they may be irresistible. If this is a positive experience, you may need to do some planning in your personal life.

Gemini
May 21 – June 20
You may have to stand by certain difficult, worrisome decisions today. You may feel a kind of urgent need for stability in your personal life. What is really behind this feeling? Is it possible that you're just afraid of your desire to put everything into question in order to make a fresh start? Today you may find the answer to this question. Stay tuned.

Cancer
June 21 – July 22
Do you help the world evolve? You may ask yourself this kind of delicate question today. Even if you're a person of action who knows how to react to situations, you should be careful not to be too impulsive. You have a specific role to play. Don't get thrown off track by emotional circumstances.

Leo
July 23 – August 22
You may tend to be overprotective of the people closest to you, especially children. You may feel you live in a dangerous world in which people don't care about responsibility to one another. But the people you're trying to protect are probably better prepared and adapted to the world than you think, Leo. They might try to tell you this even if your support is indispensable.

Virgo
August 23 –September 22
You probably need society's or other people's approval in order to feel good about yourself. But your original personality and way of thinking are often hard for others to accept. You may need to make your ideas less crazy and a little more down to Earth and practical. This should be your goal over the next few days if you don't want to feel left out of things.

Libra
September 23 – October 22
The events of the day depend on your ability to put things into question today. In general, you're good at analyzing situations when things aren't going well in your relationships. Now someone in your family may have a problem acting responsibly. It's up to that person to take care of things, but you could understand the message the person is trying to send other people with his or her behavior.

Scorpio
October 23 – November 21
The planetary aspects are going to have a big impact on you today. This isn't the time to fear the future. Rather, it's a time to make it happen. The action you take right now will be instrumental in your future. Will there be enough of us walking toward the future? You will be at the head of the pack in any case, as always.

Sagittarius
November 22 – December 21
People are more alike than we think, especially on days like today that mean virtually the same thing to everyone. Some incredible changes have taken place in the world and its economic and social systems. Now is the time to think about what the next few years have in store. Do you have any ideas? Try to articulate them.

Fashion 101

Its officially cozy sweater and hot chocolate szn! From fun patchwork pieces to classic textured cardigans, you'll be all bundled up for winter in no time. Start getting your wardrobe together for the snowy days ahead (or slightly cold days in the southern states). Here are a few winter fashion trends to keep in mind while shopping:

Printed Puffers - Despite moving into the colder weather, we’re still going outside to run errands and taking walks. Even when you’re all bundled up, you want to show personality, and a great way of doing this is showing off a fun puffer coat.

Embellished Occasion Wear - For 2021 we’re hoping for loads of occasions and reasons to dress up whether virtually or in-person. Pretty dressing in florals, sequins, or puff sleeves, are all details seen in stores.

Relaxed Denim - Denim is a key fabrication for the season ahead, and across all categories. Styles range from casual styles to more elevated, fashion-forward pieces.

Add in Some Color - While winter is known for its neutrals and darker shades, it's worth it to add in a small splash of color, taking your look to the next level. You don't have to go all out, either. Blue stripes or even a vibrant, beaded bag is an easy way to add oomph to your outfit.

Use these tips to put together a cute outfit for your next Zoom call and impress all your friends and colleagues!

This year’s President’s Project is Girls Who Code, an organization that aims to close the gender gap in technology and change the image of what a programmer looks like, while building the largest pipeline of future female engineers in the United States.

Grand President Theodora is challenging each chapter to host a fundraiser this fall with the proceeds benefiting this organization. Once you complete your fundraiser, please remit your check to headquarters with 'President's Project' in the memo line. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Reflecting on my message this month, I must say that the Maids of Athena, despite all the world challenges and obstacles of this past year, have rallied to make it a year of resilience, purpose, achievement and most of all PERSISTENCE.

Throughout most districts, young women have been initiated, members have participated in initiatives and projects within their communities, monthly meetings and events have been held virtually and communication between chapter officers and Grand Lodge officers continues to happen. Many MOA members are also taking advantage of participating in the MOA Book Club, Sister City and the Growth & Expansion Challenges. These are just some of the effective ways that you can connect with others and stay motivated even through the continuing pandemic. Girls…you are showing your RESILIENCE.

The Maids continue to have a PURPOSE as fundraising will continue this year. You can show your support by raising funds for the JED Foundation and Girls Who Code. You can also help by purchasing a JED T Shirt as they are being sold through the MOA Online Store for $30.00. Proceeds will go towards the JED Foundation which remains the Maids & Sons National Project this year. And yes…..lipsticks are still available for $20.00 and proceeds will benefit Girls Who Code, the GP’s Project again this year.

ACHIEVEMENTS occur when MOA chapters make it a priority to set goals for the year. Ensure that all current members are involved and collaborating, increase a chapter’s membership by initiating new members and bring girls back into the MOA Family after a short hiatus. Work together with each other or with your sponsoring DOP or AHEPA chapter to find a way to help revitalize and bring back enthusiasm. Continue to look at and update your chapter’s roster which is sent to you by Stephanie at Headquarters or your assigned Grand Lodge liaison. Many rosters continue to show missing information such as birthdates, emails and addresses and I thank the Sisters who have made the effort to update their rosters. Furthermore, and as a friendly reminder and per the Constitution, girls who are 23 years of age and above must hold dual membership in the MOA and DOP until the age of 28. Two forms must be filled out and signed by the officers of the MOA & DOP: The Dual Membership Form and the DOP Membership Application, along with a one-time initiation fee of $15.00. These forms can be found and downloaded on the DOP & MOA websites. I am happy to say that 65 girls have achieved this goal of becoming or planning on becoming dual members in the months ahead.

So, as we head into the New Year, let’s all show our PERSISTENCE to not only keep our personal resolutions but the resolutions and goals we have or will set for this exceptional organization of young women – THE MAIDS OF ATHENA. Please continue to meet virtually, continue to check in on your Sisters, continue to involve yourselves in the many projects and digital events sponsored by the Maids of Athena, and most importantly, continue to take care of yourselves and your family members by staying healthy and safe.

I am hopeful that in the months ahead we will return to life as we knew it – to actually see and hug each other once again, unmasked and unafraid.
