The Buzz #13

We are back after some crazy times...

Have you been wondering what has been happening in the Hive?

I am sure I am not alone in wondering where this year has gone. For me it has been an “annus horribilis”, starting off with fire destroying our generational family coastal house and then hail leaving us without a car for quite some months. We cut our most successful exhibition short and closed the Gallery due to COVID19. This pandemic has not exactly aligned with our vision of providing a ‘screen-free’ place where people can really connect in person! The restrictions have not been favourable for the music and arts scene and on top of all this Simon and I have parted ways. It has all been tough for me to re-calibrate, communicate and to carry on and be bold.

Here is a message I found posted up in Connee-Colleen's home in Feb this year.

“The most important thing is to begin and begin with a great spirit of decisiveness and boldness.”

Her son Owen told me that she posted them around the place as a reminder. She was once very bold and was not afraid to ask. She is currently in the care of her family and I feel honoured to be able to research and share her story with you all.

I encourage you to come and view her amazing works of art and immerse yourself in her written articles, news clippings, cardboard cut-outs and more.

Artist, activist, agitator, archivist.  This unique art-meets-history exhibition celebrates the remarkable life and works of living local legend Connee-Colleen Cameron and includes her sculptures, sketches, and other artefacts celebrating her creative Queanbeyan community spirit.

The two-week public show is a collaboration between Create Collaborate Collective Inc, Jerrabomberra Rotary and The Queanbeyan Hive. It has come about with the complete support and agreement and cooperation of Connee’s family, who have generously allowed her works and notes to be seen and her story told.

Coffee, Drinks, cakes and delicious sandwiches

Front of The Hive from the 26th October.

I had the great pleasure to meet Julia Zanetti at our last Gallery exhibition ‘Angels and Waratah’s in March this year.

She has such a big heart and is very passionate about community and fabulous food. She founded her business Kitchen NV in Queanbeyan West last year which was hit hard due to the difficult times we have had. The Queanbeyan Hive is happy to team up with NV to offer coffee, drinks, cakes and sandwiches. Please pop in and say hello and support this new local business.

If you find yourself wanting to connect with locals and to help give back to the community please email your name, mobile phone number, availability and expertise/job-type-preference to info@qbnhive.buzz with VOLUNTEER in the subject line.

There are three broad types of jobs we need doing:

  1. looking after the Gallery space on Friday evenings and the weekends.
  2. food, drinks, door and generally help out at our live music events on Friday evenings
  3. communication - social media, media releases, website updates and drafting and distributing The Buzz.

Nobody would work more than three hours at a time.

If you want to help us in other ways then please don't hold back and tell us what and how!
