Loft 112 is working with the new Calgary Public Library on a call for submissions to fill the Short Story Dispenser which is expected to make its debut early in 2019. The Short Story Dispenser will be located in the new Central Library
What is the Short Story Dispenser?
The Short Story Dispenser delivers short stories and poetry on demand to enchant readers with free, unexpected, original writing, vending-machine style. At the push of a button, readers choose a 1, 3 or 5 minute story which is unfurled on eco-friendly paper and ready to take and read on the go.

Call for Submissions
1 minute stories (fiction, poetry) up to 2600 characters (including spaces)
3 minutes stories (fiction, poetry) up to 4800 characters (including spaces)
5 minute stories (fiction, poetry) up to 8000 characters (including spaces)
These are our terms of publication:
- Upon submission, all stories must be original and not already published
- Short Édition asks for fiction. If nonfiction, personal essay etc can pass as fiction writing, please submit. We encourage narrative poetry, too.
- All stories must be submitted ready for publication (ie, there is no editing service)
- If approved, you will be given the information to access the Short Story Dispenser to create your own user page to add a bio and upload your own writing
- Your piece will remain in circulation until December 2019 (unless otherwise notified).
- If your piece is accepted elsewhere, you must notify Short Édition to have your piece removed from circulation (details to do this will be made available)
- You will not be paid unless Short Édition chooses your work to include in the international rotation
- In lieu of payment, Loft on EIGHTH will publish an anthology with 2019s’ selections. Details TBA
- The Short Story Dispenser will be housed in the new Central Library. Anyone can take and read a story. Keep this in mind when you submit and yes, we want material geared towards young readers as well.
- We aim to accept 100 pieces for 2019. That’s a lot of readers!
