Talking about brain power, a 2016 study showed more lower leg strength equated to a better brain! Another perk to getting stronger in class!
The study, titled Kicking Back Cognitive Aging: Leg Power Predicts Cognitive Ageing after Ten Years in Older Female Twins, found that those who began the study with the “sturdiest legs” showed the least “fall-off” in thinking skills, even when controlling for factors including diets, high blood pressure and unstable blood-sugar control.
On average, a muscularly powerful twin now performed about 18% better on memory and other cognitive tests than her weaker sister. Moreover, brain imaging of the identical twins showed that the twin with sturdier legs displayed significantly more brain volume and fewer ‘empty spaces in the brain’ than her weaker sister. YES PLEASE!
What's the reason? Getting strong in these larger lower body muscles helps in the pumping of blood back up through the body, which ultimately improves the flow of blood into the brain, thus boosts brain function.
