Our 2019 harvest at Seeds of Life was completed on November 26 at our farm at Alberton (near Ancaster Ontario). The 2019 growing season had many weather related problems, but we ended up with a decent average yield, harvesting 309 tonnes of grain corn. The main uses of this grain are animal and poultry feed, biofuel production, and edible food products.
We have donors from three Foodgrains Bank members who provide funds to help with our work –The Salvation Army, The Church of the Nazarene Canada , and the United Church of Canada . Thanks to all of you for your generous support! We want to thank our farming partners, Miller Farms, who donate the planting and harvesting work that makes our project a success. Several local suppliers also donated seed, fertilizer and crop protection products to help out with our crop expenses.
The crop was sold to a local buyer and the proceeds sent, along with your donations, to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB). After expenses, the total amount sent to CFGB for 2019 was $70,498. This is the most that we have raised for CFGB in any year since we started the project almost 30 years ago. With matching funds up to 4 to 1 for projects approved by the Government of Canada, this could turn into over $350,000 to fund the overseas relief and development projects of our church partners. Detailed financial statements for 2019 are available in the financials section of this website.
Our 2020 crop at the farm will be soybeans. After the soybeans are harvested in the fall we will follow our normal crop rotation by planting winter wheat for harvest in the summer of 2021. In the early spring we will be contacting our donors with donation details for the new growing season.
It is an honour to work with our friends and donors, as we join together to help people overseas who do not have the resources to help themselves. Truly a Christian response to hunger! If you have not already donated and would like to help with our 2020 crop expenses please see the donate page on this website.
