Barbara Kingsolver will be awarded the 2024 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters (DCAL) during the 75th National Book Awards Ceremony & Benefit Dinner on November 20th, 2024. The recipient of this award is an author that has been deemed to have enriched our literary heritage over a life of service, or a corpus of work. The recipient is awarded $10,000 in addition to the medal. “Barbara Kingsolver’s writing embraces the personal and the political, examining complex issues of social justice, exalting the natural world, and exploring progressive social change with care and specificity,” said Ruth Dickey, Executive Director of the National Book Foundation. “For Kingsolver, writing is a tool for community activism—a way of shining a light on some of the most intricate environmental and social injustices of our time, and an art form through which she can share stories of her beloved Appalachia with the world. We have all benefited from her brilliance, and it is a gift to celebrate her remarkable literary accomplishments with the 2024 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.” Barbara's works include fiction, nonfiction, poetry, investigative journalist, and science writing. Her latest novel Demon Copperhead, was the recipient of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was also an Oprah Book Club selection. Previous recipients of this award include: Walter Mosley, Edmund White, Isabel Allende, Robert A. Caro, John Ashbery, Ursula K. Le Guin, Toni Morrison, Adrienne Rich, Karen Tei Yamashita, Art Spiegelman, and most recently, Rita Dove. Nominations for this award are made by former National Book Award Winners, Finalists, judges, and other writers and literary professionals. Kingsolver was born in Annapolis, Maryland in 1955. She grew up in rural Kentucky and currently resides in southwestern Virginia. She is a trained biologist. Read more on the award and Barbara below. |

September contains Banned Books Week. Banned Books Week is September 22-28, 2024. Let Freedom Read Day is September 28th, 2024. The theme: Liberate Banned Books (#SetBooksFree). As we work to feature books that are challenged or banned we have come across so many articles, news stories, opinion pieces, and data on the fight. Check out Publisher's Weekly's The Freedom to Read Issue: All Our Coverage. This link contains multiple articles that cover the fight happening to free books and allow them to remain on shelves across America. Read about authors, librarians, independent booksellers, (like the Book Ladies) who are working hard to keep access to books for all. "In the following pages, we dig into the scope and scale of this historic wave of censorship attempts and talk with those who are doing the vital work of fighting back. Have you ever met a librarian who has been so horrifically harassed that she’s afraid to leave her house? You’re about to." Click the button below to read on: |
