Happy July Friends!
Summer is officially here. Tennessee summer is just plain hot & humid which means from the chickens to the cows we have to be very watchful. The #1 concern is heat stress so we add a few key things to our daily routines to help prevent that.
Here are a few thing we do to prevent heat stress:
Make sure everyone has plenty of clean water
Provide adequate shade
For our chickens & ducks we like to give cold treats, such as watermelon or a frozen treat block to help them stay hydrated.
We spray the cows with cool water to help keep their temperatures at a normal level.
Move evening feeding times back. Allowing them to stay in the shade longer and it's typically cooler if you feed closer to dusk.
It's important to keep yourself safe in this summer heat too so don't forget to take breaks and stay hydrated!
