February is filled with learning, planning and sharing. Michelle McGrath and WCCC member, Alyson Schaefer, recently attended the Community Anti-Drug Coalition Association (CADCA) in Washington DC. CADCA’s National Leadership Forum is a four-day conference packed with multiple adult and youth-oriented opportunities to learn the latest strategies to fight substance misuse and hear from nationally-known experts and policymakers with a full day dedicated to Capitol Hill events. The Forum is held in the Washington, DC area every year, normally the first week of February and brings together more than 3,000 participants representing community anti-drug coalitions, government leaders, youth, addiction treatment professionals, researchers, educators, law enforcement professionals, youth and faith-based leaders. The WCCC also sponsored and planned a leadership retreat (FLYY) for our Above the Influence and Black Student Union students. They focused on allyship, intersectionality, community, mental health, and self-care. They will use what they learned to build community and connection with their fellow students. We are excited to see where this journey takes them. The WCCC will also be sharing their expertise on the national stage at the upcoming Work2BeWell National Mental Health Summit. Our esteemed partner, Sean Casey from Hometown Pharmacy, and Michelle will take their Strong Mind. Strong Body. Strong You curriculum to the next level. They will be sharing how nutrition and positive mental health leads to individual peak performance and team success. The will share nutrition essentials, strategies that impact peak performance, and how rewiring the brain can lead to positive relationships and stress management. Wishing you health, resiliency, and the magic found in connection. May the journey ahead be filled with love and joy! Thanks for ENGAGING in our work! |

As the nation's leading drug abuse prevention organization, CADCA educates the public about the latest trends in sub- stance abuse, builds community coalitions from the ground up and develops helpful tools and resources that empower com- munities to solve their drug and alcohol-related problems. CADCA also facilitates a youth component that allows youth to bring student voice to their community and schools in their journey in prevention. |

During our FLYY Retreat, we covered a variety of topics but one that came up was body image. This book was recommended by one of the amazing instructors Lucy. "Humans are a varied and divergent bunch with all manner of beliefs, morals, and bodies. Systems of oppression thrive off our inability to make peace with difference and injure the relationship we have with our own bodies. The Body Is Not an Apology offers radical self-love as the balm to heal the wounds inflicted by these violent systems. World-renowned activist and poet Sonya Renee Taylor invites us to reconnect with the radical origins of our minds and bodies and celebrate our collective, enduring strength. As we awaken to our own indoctrinated body shame, we feel inspired to awaken others and to interrupt the systems that perpetuate body shame and oppression against all bodies. When we act from this truth on a global scale, we usher in the transformative opportunity of radical self-love, which is the opportunity for a more just, equitable, and compassionate world--for us all." -Goodreads | | |
