Rally! Season 2, Issue 6: September 2022

Community & Culture

When summer turns to autumn, our cheer seasons change too! The #PCATryoutTour is in full swing; many PCA Teams welcome new crews of volunCHEERleaders onto their performing and nonperforming teams at this time of year. At the PCA Board level, the nomination and application process has begun for the next election of Board Directors. In our communities, some cities continue the #PCAPrideTour parades and festivals, while others turn to street fairs and fun run/walks for health and wellness causes. Soon, we’ll start seeing #PCATeamsGiveBack as teams reveal their annual beneficiary donations. It’s been an unpredictable fundraising year - we can’t wait to watch how it plays out!

From Labor Day to #BiWeek, September awareness days have been a constant reminder that our rainbow is not just a series of stripes, but a network of intertwined movements and a broad and continuous spectrum of light and love. Next month is LGBTQ History Month and PCA is planning to dig deep into something we’ve never explored before! What could it be? Here’s a hint: the theme was inspired by one of our “What’s Your Story” #TransgenderHistoryMonth spotlights that ran between August 21 and August 30. Any guesses?

True Colors by CHEER Philadelphia

CHEER Philadelphia unites athletics with action, using the positivity of cheerleading to promote inclusion and champion equality for the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. Established in 2017, Cheer Philadelphia is a diverse group of LGBTQ+ and allied cheerleaders who volunteer their time, energy, and skills to raise spirits, awareness, and funds for local charities and community organizations.

CHEER Philadelphia’s True Colors video explains how symbolism and color connect this team to its local community and to the PCA family.

Marketing: 5-6-7-8-1! Soft launch! We’re ready to share this soft launch of PCA’s “Brand House” with YOU - our valued Rally! subscribers. A “Brand House” is a graphic organizer that depicts a corporation’s Characteristics, Pillars of Purpose, Mission, and Vision in the symbolic shape of a house. The PCA Rebrand Team just had its penultimate meeting and drafted PCA’s Brand House nearly to completion. You’ll notice there is one blank, under our newest Pillar of Purpose called “Rally!” (Coincidence?) PCA has always expressed that its purposes are to unite, support, and develop Charitable Cheerleading. After much self-reflection, we can clearly see that we have a fourth purpose: to rally for LGBTQ+ causes. But, how do we do that? We scribbled down many inspiring words and action-oriented phrases, and just couldn’t nail it without you. How would YOU describe the way PCA rallies for LGBTQ+ causes? Share this within trusted PCA circles, and give us your best line to complete the PCA Brand House Pillars! Please email marketing@pridecheerleading.org before October 15, 2022 - the final meeting of the PCA Rebrand Project!

Events: The PCA *Virtual* Educational Summit is back, and the theme for 2022 is: We>Me (read “We” is greater than “me”). This represents an intentional pivot from 2021’s introspective Finding Our Why theme, and emphasizes the power of community and the value of the connections we make within, across, and outside our teams. Summit will be all virtual for another year - half synchronous (topic-specific breakout meetings for PCA committees and subcommittees on October 15 & 16) and half asynchronous (pre-recorded webinars for everyone, rolling out during Q4) to create a variety of opportunities for PCA minds to unite online to support and develop Charitable Cheerleading.

Other PCA-hosted events you can look forward to include: the 16th Sin City Classic (the largest annual LGBTQ sporting event in the world, during which PCA will cheer at various sports and host our own Charitable Cheerleading competition, dates Jan 12-15 in Las Vegas, NV), and Gay Games 11 (a quadrennial, international LGBTQ sporting and cultural event that has been building a legacy as “the Games that change the world” since 1982; PCA will cheer in Guadalajara Nov 3-11 2023, Registration coming SO SOON!)

Governance: It’s almost time for the Annual PCA Board Director Elections! PCA held an open call for nominations from Sept 10 to 18, 2022, and Board Director Applications were due September 25. After reviewing the Applications and learning more about the Candidates, the PCA Board will hold an election at a closed meeting this October, followed by review and ratification by the PCA Delegation, and new Director Terms will begin January 1, 2023. The nominations period is closed and all applications are in for this cycle, but if you are interested in serving on one of the five PCA Committees (Admin and Governance, Development, Equity and Inclusion, Events, Marketing), those doors are always open. Please contact board@pridecheerleading.org.
