Sept. 12, 2022

Greetings!

We are excited to share the first iteration of our new e-newsletter. There is so darn much happening in/around/with East 40 initiatives that we can hardly keep up with it ourselves, so we thought to put it all in one place for you. (And we promise not to flood your inbox.)

First, we have a new(ish) website - ncceast40.org - where you can read about these and other initiatives and projects.

Next, here are some dates for your calendar:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 14: The (monthly) Farm Market at NCC

  • Wednesdays: Volunteer at the East 40

  • Thursday, Sept. 15: Good Growers club to meet

  • Wednesday, Sept. 21: Artist-in-Residence Reception

  • Sunday, Oct. 2: Beekeeping class

  • Through Friday, Oct. 14: Artist-in-Residence Exhibit

The Farm Market at NCC returns this Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 10 am - 2 pm at the main campus Quad. We'll have product from the East 40 (garlic and honey), a coffee vendor (drinks and bags), local produce, and other local items. Cash or plastic.

For now we are doing the markets once a month: our next dates are Wednesdays, Oct. 12 and Nov. 9.

Our "Volunteer Tuesdays" this past summer were quite successful, and have transitioned into "Volunteer Wednesdays" now that classes are back in session.

Come on out to the East 40 between 4-6 pm to cultivate, harvest, prep produce for market, and learn more about biodynamic farming. Time spent will count towards community service hours, for those interested.

Get your #handsinthesoil - it's #goodforthesoul!

Our "Good Growers" student club will gather for the first time this Thursday, Sept. 15 from 11 am - noon at the East 40. We offer opportunities to learn more about the gardening cycle and best practices.

If you're unable to attend this first meeting, drop us a note at kallen@northampton.edu.

Our resident beekeeper, Sharon Zondag, will offer a non-credit class,
"Beekeeping Prep: What You Need to Know to Start Your Own Hives"
at a Sunday afternoon class on Oct. 2. Get all the details here, including registration info.

Part of the session will be held at the East 40 hives.

In the summer of 2021, we launched our first Artist-in-Residency program, featuring three talented creators. One of them, Essye Klempner, has her work on display in Communications Hall, now through Friday, Oct. 14. The Artist-in-Residence exhibit also includes a sampling of work by the 2022 Artist-in-Residence, Cindy Vojnovic (a more complete exhibit of Cindy's natural dyes [top left and center] will come in 2023).

Essye's works include combination photograms and chemigrams, darkroom processes in which developer is painted onto objects which are then set on photographic paper (example, top right); ceramics made from clay processed from the East 40 soil and fired onsite; and drawings made with natural materials such as mushroom spores and mud. All the works represent her continued interest in the nexus of urban and natural, drawing and photography.

Join us for a reception on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 5-7 pm in Communications Hall. All are welcome!

Thanks for reading! We appreciate your interest,
and hope to connect again soon.
