YOUR House

Issue #17

July/August, 2022

Thank You to SparkNJ for Supporting FORTE House!

Last month, we received notice that SparkNJ selected FORTE House to receive one of its Annual Equity Grants. Briefly: SparkNJ awards annual Equity Grants through the Community Foundation of New Jersey. They provide financial support for Black-led charitable, community, and civic organizations in northern New Jersey, supporting organizations that are already fulfilling their mission but are in need of additional operating funds to continue and grow their work."
We are inspired to keep going--and growing--our impact through FORTE House! Thank you SparkNJ!

Professor Michael Mitchell on Learning and Teaching
Criminal and Social Justice

In this month's guest blog, Professor Michael Mitchell traces his career from first-hand experience working in a Texas jail, to developing a more critical and nuanced view as he earned his PhD. Now an Assistant Professor at The College of New Jersey, Dr. Mitchell uses his position to encourage students, and the public at large, to see people who experience incarceration as "human beings who deserve respect, who have dignity, who have a voice."
