The Mighty Tonto Creek
Few streams figure so prominently in Arizona history as Tonto Creek. Once the proud seat of a great Indian culture, its piney forests, treacherous canyons and fertile valleys were fought over by cavalry troops and Apache Warriors and later by feuding cattle barons. The stream bursts from springs hidden "Under the, Tonto Rim" - a land steeped in the romance of some seven Zane Grey's western novels. | | |

SHEEP ARE GRAZING ON THE MOUNTAIN ONE AGAIN!
Every Summer the Auza Sheep Co. in Casa Grande contracts with the Black Mesa Ranger District to bring their sheep to graze the forest floor to help with fire suppression. This year is no exception and the sheep have arrived! They "hang" in the forest areas off the Young Road on the South side of Hwy 260 and along FR 237 and the West side of Forest Lakes on the North side of the highway. The Pond is often used for their watering hole and you might see them there. You will probably see them sometime during the Summer. If your property borders the forest near the pond, you might see a lone sheep or a dog or two now and then. They sometimes get lost, just like Little Bo Peep's sheep.
Leave them alone and they will go home. There are 1,200 of them and they can wander. If you see a dog or two that you think might be lost, be assured that they are not. Some times they just need a break from all those sheep, or maybe it's their day off!

I am the mountain. I stand cool, tall and serene watching over the thirsty land, remote, helpful if I can be helpful. My shoulders are strong and broad and when the storms rage in during winter I am unbowed before their fury. The snow piles deep around me, deeper and deeper as the days pass and I am left alone to the silence and snow. I welcome the deep drifts for those drifts are my treasure. When the rains and the warm days of spring come, little trickles of water will begin to merge from my snow-drifts and the trickles will grow larger and larger and the dry river will flow full and wide and fast carrying the precious water to the thirsty land. The thirsty land! Not too many miles away and below as the river flows but seemingly almost a part of another world. Without my bounty the land would wither and blow away. I, the mountain, catch the rains that come in summer and all summer long I add to the flow of the river. Sometimes, though, my story is sad. Those are the dry years when the snows are sparse and the rains do not come in summer. Then 1,-too, am thirsty. My greenery is parched and the dust is dry and dinging and greedily I cling to the little moisture that comes my way. I can spare nothing for the river that flows toward the thirsty land and the river is dry and the rocks and sand in the river are stark and baked under the relentless sun.
