News from MASC's Environmental Affairs Committee
FOOD WASTE ISSUE

Action by 11:59 p.m., March 12

MASC Environmental Affairs and the student organization, Compostology, are looking for students to submit creative work illustrating the FOOD WASTE ISSUE in Maryland and our power to address it!

We have been advocating for HB150/SB124, a bill providing funds for students to lead school food waste reduction programs. This is essential to reducing our carbon and methane emissions. We've delivered 6K postcards of student support to legislators – now, help us go a step further in showing legislators that students are passionate and ready to make use of this bill and that they should vote favorably for it!!

Submit your work and SHARE this opportunity with your schools and SGAs. More details about the issue, bill, and campaign are at https://tinyurl.com/5d8y75by Feel free to contact compostologymd@gmail.com with any questions!

This month the MASC Service Coordinators are highlighting several petitions and donation centers that you can get involved in outside of MASC! The first service highlight for March is the ‘Preventative Netting on Thomas Johnson Bridge’ petition which aims to install netting along the sides of the Thomas Johnson Bridge in order to prevent the number of deaths by suicide.

The next is the Our Wave Organization that aims to establish a clear path for sexual assault survivors to find clarity and support.

The third is the Chesapeake Bay Foundation that is fighting for effective, science-based solutions to the pollution degrading in the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams. Finally, the Grassroots Crisis Intervention is a 24-hour crisis intervention center.

We hope that those that are able to assist these non-profits in reaching their goals will consider donating any amount possible. Everything counts! Even sharing the links with others can be a big help!

March Green Goals

This month, be aware of how you use water and how you can help conserve it! Simple everyday activities we do without a second thought may contaminate our water sources or, just as worse, compromise the sustainability of our water usage. We are often unaware of harmful practices, from plastic water bottles to improper waste disposal or gutter cleaning, which can contaminate our waters. So, this month, let us take action against this!

It may be helpful to first research - read an article, watch a video or two - and learn a bit more about water sustainability. Once you grasp the idea, try to use reusable water bottles, and when disposing of liquids, make sure it is not in an uncontrolled urban environment. Check twice to ensure your trash is not ending up on roads, waterways, or sidewalks, and make sure to discard liquids into sinks instead of your everyday trash bag.

If gardening, try to limit your use of fertilizers or pesticides. You can even clean your house gutters before the rain takes with it all of the harmful chemicals that accumulate! With each of these actions, you can prevent dangerous runoff with the potential to pollute ecosystems in our waters. The nitrogen and phosphorus our plastic bottles, trash, gutters, and gardening chemicals release onto groundwater can wash up into bays and overstimulate harmful aquatic growth. Next month we will introduce you to an innovative way that you can prevent these recurring problems.

MASC is a 501c3 organization.  Due to this status, we are no longer affiliated with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE); however, like the principal's and teacher's unions FBLA, and Skills USA, MASC will continue to work collaboratively with MSDE.

Our organizing resolution and bylaws are posted on our documents page.
