Instructional Control 101

A 'not so science-y' approach to behavior

Gaining and maintaining instructional control is vital to having successful ABA sessions. Instructional control involves having a positive working relationship with your learner where he/she is motivated to learn. Instructional control can look like having your learner's attention or your learner following your demands. Instructional control is gained during the pairing process. Whether this is a first-time client, or you lost instructional control over time with a client. Here are some tips to help during the pairing process:

  • Individualize sessions based on your learner's interests
  • Take time to pair with your learner
  • Reinforcers can change often, be aware of what motivates your learner
  • Provide constant reinforcement
  • Have consequence strategies handy in case unwanted behaviors arise
