Lessons, Classes & Gatherings In The Art of Gathering, author Priya Parker poses the question, "Why do we gather?" When creating class offerings, teachers often write course descriptions or even formal objectives describing what participants can expect to learn. The aforementioned book has me thinking more about why–specifically, why do people choose to take classes? |

I'd like to hear from you. Is there something specific you'd like to learn? Is there a class you'd like to take (ex. Music Fundamentals, Guitar History Research Guidance, Armchair Traveling Through the Arts, All the Things You Wanted to Know About Music But Were Afraid to Ask–When Do I Clap!)? Perhaps you'd like to share an idea about why you take classes. Whether you are a casual learner or a professional musician who wants to work on something specific that I may be able to help with, send me an email. I do want to offer community music classes again as well as lessons for more advanced players, and cultivate a positive and celebratory spirit around learning about music. Community classes would be especially for adult learners and perhaps be held in different environments: think Nice People Learning Music Theory Over Coffee. (A tip from the book was to create descriptive, specific titles. I'm still working on it.) I will have some offerings for colleagues and fellow creatives such as A Musician's Meditation and Intro to Jazz Guitar Chords for Awesome Classical Guitarists Who Don't Play Jazz...Yet. I also have a few spaces open now for private lessons. Send a message to sign up or request information–I look forward to hearing from you. A Musician's Meditation I began studying mindfulness, neuroplasticity and meditation a few years ago and I am currently taking a course in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. In addition to the positive impact on overall wellbeing, I have become very curious about how this knowledge can be applied to teaching, learning and performing music. Can it can contribute to more enjoyable performance experiences and perhaps support creativity? I hope to create workshops in the future that inform and support wellbeing for musicians. In the meantime, I am leading some guided meditation sessions. Join me on the journey! She tended to Francisco Tarrega during his later years as he needed help with his health conditions; along with Agustin Barrios, she is credited with being instrumental (pun intended) in promoting guitar as a classical instrument in Brazil during the early 20th century; and she holds a place among figures such as Emilio Pujol, Daniel Fortea and Pepita Roca as one of the great disciples of Tarrega? | | The 31st season of the John E. Marlow Guitar Series is about to commence and features another incredible roster of international guitarists. The concerts are all held on Sundays at 4pm at the Cultural Arts Center Montgomery College in Silver Spring and artists are often guests on Tom Cole's Sunday morning radio show, G-Strings, which airs on WPFW 89.3. | | |

A Look Back: The Latin GRAMMYs in 2022 | | As musicians and artists (and I am sure others as well), there can be pressure to move on to the next thing–a constant push to achieve or create. Sometimes, it is really nice to pause, look back, and be happy–with gratitude. With that in mind, I'd like to share a very special memory. Several years ago, I began working with guitarist Berta Rojas on a project to honor great women guitarists. I contributed as a researcher and consultant, seeking, gathering and organizing information and scores. As the project came to fruition over the course of four years, I was also engaged to write elaborate liner notes. My husband Danny Webber graciously helped with proofreading. Released in spring 2022, it was incredible to hold the finished album, Legado–the tangible representation of those years and the wonderful experience working with Berta. Even the packaging was stunning! Several months after the release, Berta told me the album was nominated for 2 Latin GRAMMYs and that we would be attending the awards ceremony in Las Vegas. In the ballroom of the MGM Grand, seated with Berta, Danny and friends, we heard Legado named not once but twice for Best Classical Album and Best Classical Contemporary Composition for the work Anido’s Portrait written for the album by Sergio Assad.
