Schedule "stress-free zone" time

Our mission is to provide space for those seeking hope, comfort and peace as they explore ways of experiencing God’s love.

Dear Friends,

School. It's what's on a lot of minds today. This week marks the return of most pre-K-12th grades in our area. College students are making their way back to Bryan-College Station with classes to start soon.

Even if you don't have a direct connection to schools of any level, you'll surely notice the uptick in stores, restaurants and traffic.

Generally, this is a good thing for our community. But it can also signal stress overload.

That's where we have something to offer -- a free place to duck in or attend a scheduled program. It's where peace, comfort and hope are always in abundance.

Setting the Spiritual Woman Free

Women are invited on a journey, mapped to help open hearts and minds to a different way of knowing the trinity of God through the life and experiences of the women in the Bible. The program will use the concept of “imaginal” to enlighten the path.

Presented by Dr. Vivian Dawkins, a spiritual director from Spring, TX, the event will be Saturday, Sept. 14, 9 a.m.-Noon.

“To untangle and set free the spirit of the woman inside each of us takes an effort on our part to imagine the ‘imaginal,’” Dawkins said. “We’ll consider the liminal space where God is more distinctly present than the objective space where our ‘normal’ and ‘traditional’ reality reside.”

She said the morning will help unravel centuries of rules and regulations designed to enforce conformity in Christian belief and faith that may have left women confused, frustrated, and entangled. Come join us for a short journey designed to help free a woman’s spirit and find the divine within our souls. The program is free, but registration is required.

Religion in Aggieland Displayed

We wrap up this August with our display of unique religious items found at thrift stores and resale markets in and around the Brazos Valley.

An exhibit of "unexpected religion" will be viewable in August until Aug. 30.

“Finding Religion in Aggieland” is part of a project led by spiritual director Heidi Campbell, who is studying where religion shows up in thrift stores and what stories secondhand culture tells about contemporary religion in Texas.

The display includes jewels and beads, prayer stools and tools, icons and other miscellaneous religious artifacts.

Spiritual directors lend a (holy) ear at Middleway

A team of spiritual companions whose ministry is to listen to you with a holy ear are the backbone of Middleway. One of us can meet with you monthly in a non-judging atmosphere as you discern where God is in your life. We actively listen without trying to "fix" you. It's powerfully healing. See www.middlewayurbanmonastery.org/spiritual-direction. or email us at info@middlewayurbanmonastery.org for more information.

How to experience the monastery

Attend any of our programs for sure. But also know the monastery is also open weekdays Tuesday-Friday and some evenings, Saturdays or Sundays for you to come use the library, art area, or various sitting areas in a relaxing atmosphere where no one will bug you. Children are welcome to come with an adult.

We need you!

Three hours a month, week, or day. Regular or now-and-then. You pick what's convenient for you to volunteer and help welcome others into this peaceful place. We are 100 percent volunteer operated, and you can make a meaningful impact just be being present.
