March 2024: Volume 2, Issue 3

🪴 Linda's Letter 🔭

Let's see... what happened in February...

I MET BILL NYE!

I still can't believe it! I had an amazing trip to California and met so many incredible people. I toured Caltech, met with scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and did a science experiment with Bill Nye on the Jennifer Hudson Show! I gave an EGOT winner a chemistry lesson. Is this really my life?!

I visited the set of Young Sheldon and hung out with my friend Iain Armitage at the Warner Brothers filming lot. I even spent National Science Day at the California Science Center! I visited the Griffith Observatory and saw Space Shuttle Endeavor and the Hollywood sign!

I was on NBC Nightly News Kids Edition, and I signed so many books at Kids Fest 2024! Thank you to everyone for taking time to come to my events and support science education!

Spring will be full of new adventures. I have events scheduled at schools and libraries, and Darwin is so excited to meet all of you! I can't wait to present my mealworm research at the National STEM Festival in Washington DC! And there's another big surprise coming, too. I can't wait to share it with you!

Be brave and dream big!

What can YOU do

to reduce your carbon footprint?

Use reusable water bottles!

This small change can make a big difference!

Bottling water releases carbon dioxide into our atmosphere, and plastic water bottles make their way to our oceans. This plastic waste kills 1.1 million marine creatures every year.

Did you know we throw sixty million water bottles away each day? And this waste isn't just bad for our environment. It's expensive, too! Switching to reusable water bottles could save you over $1300 a year.

You can make a difference!

🐢 Turtle Talk 🐢

Sea Turtle Nests

It's nesting season! Each year, from March to October, endangered sea turtles lay their eggs on Florida's beaches. Amazingly, they return to the same beach they hatched on to lay their eggs! Every beach has a unique magnetic signature, and turtles use that signature as a compass to guide them back. So how can we help? Give turtles and their nests space and turn off artificial lights that can disturb or confuse them. Clean up food waste that attracts predators and trash that can hurt them. Keep the beaches clear of furniture and other obstacles. We can all do our part!

📚 Puzzle Time! 🧩

Are you addicted to Sudoku? I sure am! Sudoku is number puzzle that requires the player to fill a grid with numbers that create a pattern. Numbers can only appear once in each horizonal line, vertical line, or grid section. Like other puzzles, Sudoku improves memory and logical reasoning. But most importantly, they are SUPER fun! You can find tons of free Sudoku puzzles at krazydad.com, and you'll find the first set linked on the LindasLab.org newsletter page, too!

🔬 Science Outreach 🔭

Our programs are available to all public schools in Prince William County, and to libraries across Virginia. We are working hard to expand these programs and the number of children we can reach. And you can help!
