            Adult Ladder

Back by popular demand, our Adult Men’s ladder kicks off the week starting September 17. Matches are played bi-weekly. We set up your opponent and you both find a court time to play. Matches are one hour in length and standings are kept online. The level is 3.0-4.0 and last year we had 18 players at the height of our season. To sign up, just call 722-3491 or email us at BTC@tennisctr.com. The ladder is a great way to hone your singles skills paying against a variety of levels and game styles. It is also ideal for someone who has a rotating schedule and wants to play but has trouble committing to a set weekly contract time.

US Open Bus trip

Tuesday, August 28 two busloads (94) of fellow upstaters made our yearly pilgrimage to the USTA National Tennis Center and fairly represented our region. We cheered, probed and wandered the grounds in great fashion and made our presence felt. Large quantities of beverages were consumed to help offset the 100+ heat index. No one complained. I repeat, no one complained, a rare day in my world! Our group gathering included people from Pa, Elmira-Corning and the greater Binghamton area. Our two buses were aptly named Bus A-Federer’s Fanatics & Bus B Djokovic Jesters. Bob deVente led the post-game festivities with a nice spread and boundless energy.

   Staff

We would like to officially welcome Russell Payne & Charlie Ellis to our teaching staff. While Russell (pic right) has been working part time for several years, he has decided to make tennis a career and is now available for private and group lessons. Russell’s teaching experience, incredible personality and being one of the top players in the area create a perfect fit here at BTC.

Charlie (pic left) is currently the assistant men’s tennis coach at Binghamton University, and has been teaching here part time for the past several months. Charlie’s resume is long and storied; a former NCAA Div 1 All American, tennis manager/director/teaching pro at several clubs, and his experience and knowledge of the game lifts our staff. Charlie is available on a limited basis.

USTA

Binghamton enjoyed another successful USTA season. While we did not have any teams win at regionals in Buffalo, Jason Spencer’s 4.0 team (pic right) did compete in Sectionals thanks to the winning team unable to attend, and they made the most of their opportunity, winning two matches.

Congrats to the following local league winning teams:

Sue Burns 3.0 18 & over, Kris Starke 3.5 18 & over & 40 & over, Sue Vail 4.0 18 & over, Paige Patterson 4.0 40 & over, Ben Santos 3.0 18 & over, Bruce White 3.5 18 & over, Jason Spencer 4.0 18 & over.

Tri Level 2019 leagues are now forming.

Each team will consist of three courts playing three lines of doubles (one team at each NTRP level). There are two divisions for men & women. Tri Level Silver 3.0, 3.5 & 4.0. Tri Level Gold 3.5, 4.0 & 4.5.Gold Local League plays October 28th through December; Silver Local League: November through January.  This is a great way to form a team with friends!  If you want to form a team contact Lynn @ buffamonti@eastern.usta.com. Any questions about playing or getting on a team contact Kris at BTC!

Juniors

Our fall session of Junior Competitive Tennis Programs (JCTP) will start up this weekend. We offer lesson classes for all levels of play, starting with our 7 & under Quickstart program Friday 5pm and Saturday 11 am. Followed by Bronze I, II, & III Saturdays 12:30-5pm and Silver I, II & Gold, Sundays 12-6pm. JCTP has been a staple for BTC juniors for over 30 years. Classes combine drills, instruction, and competitive play and serve both as a supplement to the junior already taking private lessons as well as the junior who wants to use JCTP has their weekly tennis.  Back by popular demand, your USTA sponsored Youth Tennis League (YTL) runs Friday evenings 6-8pm. This program is for entry level 9-12 year olds, and is run 4 weeks at a time to keep the cost down and be flexible. We plan to start our 1st session Friday September 14. To sign-up please call 722-3491.

We will be running our 5th and final 10 & under Orange Ball tournament Saturday September 22 from 12-4pm. These events have been great, with on court being short sets of round robin play, off court foosball and ping pong, and everyone receiving a medal and prize! Sign-up is online. Just click on the above link. Ryan Davis along with myself and Ryan Cummings have put in significant time and effort to secure and run these events, and promote fun healthy play among our youths. Please take advantage of this event, and we look forward to our 2019 schedule as well as possibly some informal events over the holidays!

We will be hosting a Super Six 12 & under tournament September 15-17. The top ranked juniors in the East will be competing. If you’re a junior, it will be well worth your while to come up and see just how good the best are and what you can do to take that next step in your tennis game.

We would like to wish a few of or BTC graduates good luck as they head to college. Freddy Purpora is off to St Lawrence, Elise White-RPI, Claire Loughlin-Scranton and all three plan to play varsity tennis on their respective teams. Ava McCann is also headed to St Lawrence, where she will play basketball but will consider a “minor” in tennis next year.  All were a pleasure to have worked with, and will represent BTC in the finest of fashion. We are proud of your accomplishments and wish you the best. If we missed anyone, please let us know so we can recognize your child in our next newsletter.

BTC helped with two neat events this past July in conjunction with the LGT Tennis Challenger. We ran a one day, 3 hour JTT event consisting of six teams from across our region. Players then got to conveniently watch pro tennis right here at BTC! We also helped organize a Net Generation (NG) demo at Rec Park with almost 20 junior participating. More on NG and how this USTA initiative affects your child in our next newsletter. Special thanks to Buffalo/Rochester tandem of Joe Steger and Laramie Gavin for putting on these events.
