This is NOT a Pokemon!

A fish found off the coast of Japan could be the deepest ever recorded. Japanese and Australian researchers filmed a Pseudoliparis snailfish at 8,336 metres down as part of an expedition to some of the world's deepest ocean trenches. Snailfishes are a family of fish that have been successful in exploiting inhospitable habitats such as cold and deep water, allowing them to rapidly evolve into a multitude of species. Professor Alan Jamieson, the chief scientist of the expedition, says, 'We have spent over 15 years researching these deep snailfish; there is so much more to them than simply the depth, but the maximum depth they can survive is truly astonishing.'

New York Water Week Students Inspire!

We were so impressed by high school students in NYC at New York Water Week's World Water Day. Students learned and presented, sharing so many incredible projects including studies on public access to waterways, fare reductions for students to use water-based transportation and great maritime work and initiatives.

Back By Popular Demand!

Urban Arts students in Hoboken, NJ have enjoyed the combination of ocean conservation discussions and how it inspires their art. We look forward to the next workshop on April 29th.

Beneath the Sea

We enjoyed sharing important ocean conservation and marine career information with students from the NY/NJ/DC/Boston areas at Beneath The Sea's youth day. Many interesting divers and ocean enthusiasts stopped by our booth on Saturday and Sunday to talk about current events, ocean issues and our programs. It was great to meet so many wonderful folks. Also, Brayden L. was the lucky winner of our SeaSmart gift certificate and swag basket!

Alumni Spotlight

John T. from Texas adventured with us to Baja, Mexico last summer, getting his PADI Open Water SCUBA and SeaSmart Ocean Advocate certifications. He will join us again this summer in Roatan-learning new topics in ocean conservation and marine science!
