Expanding upon traditional ideas of painting, Sarah Cain’s colorful, kaleidoscopic canvases, immersive environments, and stained-glass windows blur the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and architecture. Cain often modifies the surface of her work by cutting, braiding, altering, or disfiguring a composition until the original image is no longer recognizable. Frequently, as in Rasta Disco, her works incorporate precious or semi-precious gemstones, beads, photographs, or trinkets into their compositions, alluding to abstracted portraits relating to the artist’s life.
