We are looking forward to a busy summer at Middle Island. Most of our courses are already full but there are still a few opportunities. Here is a summary of what is happening and some helpful tips to make the most of the summer at ABC Middle Island.

Tuesday & Thursday Cooking

This is a brand new opportunity for Parents/Guardians to join a course while their children are joining a sailing course this summer.

This is open to all adults (and non-members so long as your child is taking part in a course the same week). Learn some easy to cook dishes with our MI Head Chef.

Book with Amy at reception by calling 2552 8182 or email booking@abclubhk.com

Weekend SUP Intro Sessions

These sessions are 2.5hrs long and are a familiarisation session for novice SUP'ers. For ABC members it will also enable them to be added to the hire list after this session.

We still have space on the following dates.

20, 28 June

12, 18 July

16, 22 August

I've passed my sailing course what do I do now?

We are excited to be welcoming so many new sailors to our sport this summer. We hope that you will be inspired to do even more sailing. You may have seen our Sailing Pathway on our website and here are a few ideas of what you can do once you have mastered the basic skills.

Junior and Youth Sailors

Once you have completed Junior Stage 3 or the Feva Sailing Course there are more options open to you.

Junior and Youth Explorer Teams train most Sundays and we will be increasing capacity after the summer. Check out the details online here. You can register your interest by email with Howie our Chief Instructor.

If you are interested in Racing you can look at joining our Aberdeen Racing Academy who train Wednesday after school and at weekends. On 29 and 30 August we will be running a weekend of trials for the Optimist team and you can sign up for this once you have completed the Junior Stage 4 course. More details online here.

Older sailors who have completed the Level 3 course and interested in racing on 29ers can contact the head coach for details on a trial.

For adults there are a number of different options after completing the 5 day adult beginners course including,

  • Saturday Intermediate Sailing
  • Sunday Racing Club
  • Weekly Lady Sailing Group
  • Advanced Courses by demand

Powerboat Courses

These practical courses are filling up fast too. At the time of writing there are spaces on courses from 25 July.

On 8 & 9 August we will be running a mark layer training course. This is for those who already have completed the Powerboat Level 2. More details will be available soon. You can register your interest with the MI Sports and Recreation Manager.

If you are looking to gain your Hong Kong Licence (PVOCC) the Club also offers theory courses to prepare you for this. More details online here.

Summer Weather

As with every year we will be effected by rainstorms and/or typhoons this summer. Here are a few reminders.

Red/Black Rainstorm and Typhoon 3 or higher signals

We only automatically cancel session when the red/black rainstorm, or typhoon 3 or higher is in force 1.5 hrs before the scheduled start time. You can check which signals are in force at the Hong Kong Observatory website. If the signal is raised during the course we will return to shore and continue with shorebased topics until the end of the session or when students can safely return home. We will contact parents/guardians if students need to be collected early. Please note that in the case of typhoons we need sufficient time to prepare the Club's typhoon defenses so sometimes courses may need to finish early in order for us to achieve this.

Thunderstorms, Amber Rainstorms and Monsoon signals

Courses will continue as scheduled although we will only be on the water when it is safe to do so. Thunderstorms and Amber Rainstorms normally only last a couple of hours so most times we are able to get on the water at some point and complete onshore topics as well.

Please check email and mobile phones registered with us when you made your booking as we will communicate through these two methods.

New Partnership with HK Country Club

If your child/ren is/are under 7 yrs old or you couldn't join one of our sailing courses because they were full, then take a look at what is available at Hong Kong Country Club this summer where shorebased sports camps are organised.

This is a new partnership that we will continue to develop later this year.
