Lake Tanganyika Fishing Canoes

We live on the shores of one of the longest lakes in the world, Lake Tanganyika. The lake is more like a sea than a lake. It has tides, the waters can be rough or smooth and it is even slightly salty due to the fact that it has only one outlet, the Lukuga River in Kalemie, DRC.

Traditional wooden canoes used for fishing litter the beaches along the lake and every morning and evening, fishermen can be seen coming and going with their nets and fish. Once they return to shore, they pay close attention to anchor their boats as the currents of the lake could easily pull their canoes, their livelihoods, causing them to drift into the distance.

While we maneuver through the strange currents that life is throwing our way, like the fishermen of Lake Tanganyika, we must pay close attention to our “canoes” that carry us, our faith, and remain anchored so as not to drift into the unknown. Stay close, stay strong, our faith is sure and will keep us from the dangers of the drift.

Heb. 2:1 “Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.”

Africa Updates

  • In response to the Covid-19 crisis in Malawi, together with donors like Hand of Hope and others, we have been able to not only continue feeding 500 children in the village of Mtsiliza, but we have also been able to hand out some added food supplies to 200 families in the village.
  • The rains in East Africa have been unusually heavy this year. Bujumbura, Burundi is particularly vulnerable due to its setting next to Lake Tanganyika. The lake and a nearby river that feeds into the lake have both broken their banks causing massive amounts of flooding. Tens of thousands have fled their homes. Together with Hand of Hope, we were able to hand out some much needed relief to 200 families.

On May 20th, Burundi will be holding elections and the following day, Malawi will also be casting their ballots. Please pray for us as we pass through a tenuous time in both nations. Thank you for your partnership, love and prayers for the continent!
