I think it’s safe to say life can be pretty unpredictable, especially after the past two years. The stresses of everyday life can make it difficult to just ‘roll with the punches’. We all strive for fluidity in our day to day lives the same way we strive for fluidity in our fitness and in our movements. But let’s face it, finding balance in life can be just as challenging as finding balance in a single leg squat. So how do we maintain this balancing act? How do we avoid becoming rigid in our lives and in our daily movements? That’s where silliness comes into play (pun intended).
As we grow older, we often lose sight of our inner-child. As work becomes the priority our silliness diminishes. Our adult responsibilities start to replace our imaginations and our creativity. We start to reject the value of silliness and the purpose it serves. But there is value in absurdity and ridiculousness. In fact, it is a vital part of human existence. We must give ourselves permission to dabble in nonsensical play, and allow ourselves to get lost in it. When we let go of fear and judgment we can begin to take delight in the ridiculousness of whimsical fun. Laughter is the best medicine and by embracing silliness, we allow ourselves to reap the benefits of laughter. It reminds us that life is fun! It doesn’t have to be so serious all the time. Surly we can all sacrifice a little dignity for absurdity and in turn we will let go of so much unnecessary fear.
When was the last time you laughed so hard it hurt? When was the last time you laughed so hard you lost all control? That’s the stuff that makes life worth living. That’s what feeds the soul. When you’re laughing uncontrollably it’s hard to worry or stress. The weight of the world disappears in moments of pure bliss. So let laughter be the medicine you need and let exercise be your magic pill. Give yourself your daily dose of endorphins and serotonin, all those feel good hormones. Invite lightheartedness into you life. Be silly. It’s one of the simplest and easiest ways to reduce stress and give yourself that balance in all the seriousness of life. So get that ab-workout in from those deep belly laughs, embrace your silliness, find your inner-child. Because when you do get back to work chances are you will feel lighter, clearer, happier, more productive and balanced.
