Woodworkers Chapter News

October 2023

Woodworkers Club Officers:  President: Sandy McKinnis, Vice President: Jim Powell; Secretary open, Board Members: Larry Holman, Bob Lackey, Greg Lyall, Alan Peck, Bill Poole and Kaeli Stangl.

October Monthly Meeting: The October monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. We will meet in the training center room at the Alaska Industrial Hardware (AIH) on Dimond and the Old Seward Hwy.  Please enter by the side door near the Duluth Trading Company.

This month’s presentation will be one you don’t want to miss! Bill Poole of Alaska Woodcrafters (http://alaskawoodcrafters.com) returns with another informative presentation on woodworking finish techniques which will also include an audience hands on practice using a sprayer. Bill’s business specializes in restoration, repair, and custom-built furniture. Bill is passionate about the art of woodworking and enjoys sharing his craftsmanship knowledge and expertise.

The main portion of our monthly meetings feature guest speakers as well as members who share their expertise. Past topics have included design and construction techniques, project presentations, tool tune-ups, jig demonstrations, and bending.

September Monthly Meeting:

September 12 was the first monthly meeting of the ACWA Woodworkers Chapter after our summer hiatus. The Woodworkers Chapter meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month from September to May.

Dave Junge, a long time ACWA member, gave an hour presentation on Making Musical Instruments. He discussed the instruments he made; examples of techniques and how he made several of them; learning opportunities and sourcing components; and emphasized opportunities to include children in the making of instruments. Dave’s creations shown in the PowerPoint presentation included a music stand, a large set of chimes with tall stand, a drum making project involving a large group of children, a Chinese instrument called the Guzend (pronounced goo-jung which plays like a guitar and sounds like a piano); and a hammered dulcimer. Dave also brought several of his musical instruments to show the audience and to play including a thumb piano, Native American flute, travel fiddle, Savart fiddle, auto harp, and Irish harp. Dave gave us a sampling of all the instruments by playing a short tune on each. Many thanks to Dave for his presentation and sharing his beautiful musical instruments!

Workshop Equipment Damage:  We had an unauthorized user enter the workshop, use our equipment and seriously damage the planner. The damage was discovered later that week when a class was held. After purchasing parts, the repairs have been made. Two weeks prior, an unauthorized user left the bandsaw in need of repair which was discovered at the beginning of a class as well. Members are only to be in the shop for classes, must register for the Open Shop Program and have an approved monitor present. No exceptions. We hope to prevent this from happening in the future after tightening authorized entry measures. Our new shop at Commercial Drive will have further additional security. Please remember you are on surveillance video!

New Workshop Space update:  We are moving in this month!

Construction of the new shop at AIH on Commercial Drive is complete and the equipment move from the Midtown shop location to Commercial Drive will happen on October 14. We need your help to prepare for the move and with setting up the new shop. Please contact Sandy McKinnis at (907-562-3994 or akspeech@mtaonline) to find out how you can help.

Just as important as the move, we are encouraging a strong showing of our members at the Grand Opening event on October 27 at the workshop from 1 to 6 p.m. The day will include food, displays, meeting fellow members and potential new ones, media coverage, etc. Please add this to your calendar and stop in for the fun at 2716 Commercial Drive.

Bookshelves Needed for Our Library:

A few years ago, when moving from the Spenard Recreation Center on a day’s notice, our chapter had to find temporary homes for 3 nice oak bookshelves during the chaos. We really appreciate the volunteers for helping with the move and storing them. We are now in need of one bookshelf again to permanently house our library materials at the shop. Please let us know if you have these shelves and could make one or two available. Anyone else that has a nice large bookshelf they wish to donate, please contact Sandy McKinnis at (907) 562-3994 or akspeech@mtaonline. Below is a picture of the bookshelves we had.

Update Your Contact Information:

GCI email addresses will be discontinued in 2024. Please let us know your updated email address if you currently use GCI so you will not miss out on future ACWA newsletters and information. Contact acwaclub@gmail.com.

The Open Shop Program has been suspended for October and November while we get moved into our new space and get organized. We plan to resume the first Saturday in December to provide members access to the shop equipment and to help folks with projects as needed.

From the Scrollers:

It is sad to announce that the Creative Scroll Club has been suspended for this year. There has been very little interest shown in learning the hobby or participating in meetings or events.

Over the years the club has donated hundreds of toys and puzzles to children in Anchorage and the valley area. There have been many happy children receiving joy and love during the holiday season. This year Alaska Regional hospital,  Alaska Native hospital, Matsu Regional hospital and the Special Santa program will receive 10-15 puzzles and toys for the last time. We are in hopeful that next year we can resume providing these gifts.

Thank you to all those who have participated over the years in making the toys and puzzles. A big thank you to all those who participated in making puzzles at the State Fair this year. You made many children as well as adults very happy.

Currently the club scroll saw and additional supplies will be held at the new AIH facility. These items will be available to any club member during shop times and classes. If anyone is interested in restating the club please let the board of directors know about your interest.

Happy Scrolling until we meet again.

From the Carvers:

The woodcarvers had a great turn out at our September meeting.  One patron even brought an amazing array of donuts. We had fun carving. We had a few new people that we were excited to meet.

Next carving will be October 14th at 10am at AIH by Duluth. See you then.

From the Carvers:

Hello! This Saturday will be the 1st woodcarvers meeting of the season. We meet the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month Sept-May. Please come join us. We meet from 10am till about 1 or 2pm. The meeting is at AIh 8801 Old Seward Hwy, Anchorage, AK 99515. Please park and come in the side door by Duluth.

I want to give a big thank you for everyone that volunteered at the State Fair this year. We had an awesome time. It was fun to see everyone come together and demonstrate to the public with amazing talent.
