Oct. 5, 2022

Greetings!

We are back with the second of our 'new newsletter' - we have so much happening in/around/with East 40 initiatives that we thought to put it all in one place for you. (And we promise not to flood your inbox.)

Have you visited our website - ncceast40.org? This is where you can read about these and other initiatives and projects.

Next, here are some dates for your calendar:

  • Wednesdays from 4-6 pm: Volunteer at the East 40

  • Thursdays from 11 am-noon: Good Growers club at the East 40

  • Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 11 am - 2 pm: Farm Market on the Quad

  • Through Friday, Oct. 14: Artist-in-Residence Exhibit

The Farm Market at NCC returns next Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 10 am - 2 pm at the main campus Quad. We'll have product from the East 40 (garlic, honey, and decorative corn), organic produce from Blackbird Farms, coffee to drink (and to buy beans) from Monocacy Coffee Co., and locally grown apples from Scholl's Orchards. Cash or plastic.

For now we are doing the markets once a month: our next date will be Wednesday, Nov. 9.

We are having a good time at our "Volunteer Wednesdays"! Come on out to the East 40 between 4-6 pm to cultivate, harvest, prep produce for market, and learn more about biodynamic farming. And sometimes we do other fun projects! Time spent will count towards community service hours, for those interested.

Get your #handsinthesoil - it's #goodforthesoul!

Our "Good Growers" student club has been gathering on Thursdays from 11 am - noon. We offer opportunities to learn more about the gardening cycle and best practices.

If you're unable to attend but are interested, drop us a note at kallen@northampton.edu.

In the summer of 2021, we launched our first Artist-in-Residency program, featuring three talented creators. One of them, Essye Klempner, has her work on display in Communications Hall, now through Friday, Oct. 14. The Artist-in-Residence exhibit also includes a sampling of work by the 2022 Artist-in-Residence, Cindy Vojnovic, who works with natural dyes.

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, we gathered for an Artists Reception to honor Essye and Cindy and their work. Above: Sienna Heath, Essye, and Rachael Gorchov, Assistant Professor of Fine Arts, DOG NAME?; below: Cindy, Rachael and Essye, with Cindy's work. PC: Tom Shillea

Essye's works (above) include combination photograms and chemigrams, darkroom processes in which developer is painted onto objects which are then set on photographic paper; ceramics made from clay processed from the East 40 soil and fired onsite; and drawings made with natural materials such as mushroom spores and mud. All the works represent her continued interest in the nexus of urban and natural, drawing and photography.

Thanks for reading! We appreciate your interest,
and hope to connect again soon.

See you at the Farm Market on Wednesday, Oct. 12!
