Bugthorpe's Tree of Hope Available now! |
I am sure you will all be glad to hear that Bugthorpe's Christmas trees will be making a return for Christmas 2021! After the beautiful success of last year's Memory Baubles we wanted to do something again to bring the village together as a community. In the spirit of helping the environment we have decided against using plastic, so this year we will be hanging pine cones, along with everyone's hopes and wishes, for the future. This year you can write and decorate your hope tag, we will laminate it for you and hang it on one of our Bugthorpe Christmas trees along with a sparkly pine cone. Each hope tag costs just £2, or 5 for £8, and can be collected from, and returned to, Bob at the Bugthorpe Shop and Post Office. All the proceeds of this year's Tree of Hope will be put towards the village hall roof repairs. Please remember not to stick anything on your tag that won't go through a laminator. We are looking for a beautiful but flat design. We will be lighting the trees up together as we did last year...which brings us on to our Christmas Event! |

Bugthorpe's Christmas Event! Friday, December 3rd |
We are hosting a village Christmas event to celebrate the lighting up of the Christmas trees and to gather as a community during the festive season. This will be held on Friday 3rd December. We will start to gather from 5.30pm - 5.45pm, with the lighting of the tress at 6pm. This will accompanied by beautiful carol singing by Bugthorpe C of E school students. We will then continue to the village hall for festive refreshments, including mulled wine, mince pies, hot chocolate and ginger bread men! We really hope you can join us! |
Last year we asked everyone to take part in lighting up a window for Christmas and the results were fantastic, everyone enjoyed seeing all the festive windows, doorways and gardens when walking round the village. This year we are inviting everyone to do the same again, in the hopes of bringing that same special Christmas joy to Bugthorpe. If you would like to join in you can light them up when you are ready, or you can light them up on the night of Friday December 3rd, to coincide with the light up of the Bugthorpe Christmas trees! We cannot wait to see them all! |

We are wanting to gather interest in bell ringing in St Andrew's Church, Bugthorpe. We are wanting to create a group of villagers who will gather monthly for training/practice followed by supper at Dina's house. After training the group will work in pairs to ring the bells at funerals, weddings, pre-church services and other special occasions. A £2-£5 donation will be made towards supper, of which 100% will be donated towards St Andrew's funds. If you are interested in joining and learning and interesting new skill, please contact the church warden, Verity on 07845 265953, or email us at bugthorpevillage@gmail.com. |

As the cost of the church grounds maintenance is growing we are wanting to find out if any villagers would be happy to help with cutting the grass. We are hoping for a small group so that the work is not too much for one person. We are unsure of exactly what this would look like until we know how many people are interested, but local villages do the same and it works well for them. It has been suggested that a lawn mower and fuel be readily available so it can be done when you are free (rather than being on a rota), and that maybe it is broken down into sections. If you are interested in helping with this please contact contact the church warden, Verity on 07845 265953, or email us at bugthorpevillage@gmail.com. |

Friends of Bugthorpe Church |
The Friends of Bugthorpe Church are a group from the village, and sometimes further afield, who recognise that having a working church in the village is important and help to contribute towards the continuation and upkeep of the church. Friends of Bugthorpe Church meet at least once per annum to discuss the future of the church and put forward ideas for fundraising etc. If you would like to become a Friend please contact the church warden Verity, on 07845 265953, or email us at bugthorpevillage@gmail.com. We appreciate not everyone will want to, or won't have time to become a Friend of Bugthorpe Church, however if you would like to donate towards the church in any way please contact us and we can let you know how to do this. |

Remembrance Sunday Sunday, November 14th |
Thank you to everyone who joined us for Remembrance Sunday, it was a beautiful service. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die WE SHALL NOT SLEEP, THOUGH POPPIES GROW IN FLANDERS FIELDS. - John McCrae The day before he wrote "In Flanders Fields", one of John's closest friends was killed and buried in a grave decorated with only a simple wooden cross. Wild poppies were already blooming between the crosses that marked the graves of those who were killed in battle. Unable to help his friend or other fallen soldiers, John McCrae gave them a voice through "In Flanders Field". |
