Fall 2019 Newsletter

It was a busy summer for restoration work and now we're busy with nutrient enhancement and getting ready for riparian planting!

Silver & Bluebird Creek Washougal River project

This SRFB-funded project restored fish passage to some phenomenal habitat for steelhead and resident rainbow and cutthroat trout. These creeks were plagued by large human-caused cemented log jams that blocked passage to four miles of quality habitat.  The log jams also blocked downstream transport of wood and spawning gravel. We broke up the log jams and redistributed the wood to restore natural habitat conditions and enhance spawning and rearing habitat.

In the words of salmon advocate Bill McMillan: "I can’t adequately relay the emotions on seeing the video and to know that at last wild summer steelhead have access to the fine habitat of Bluebird Creek."

In the spring, LCFEG participated in the Klineline Kids Fishing Derby and the StreamTeam Earth Day Fest. We also organized a volunteer tree planting event for Earth Day at Harry Gardner Park in Toutle and planted hundreds of young trees. In the past year, we've partnered with students and teachers at Hudson's Bay, Camas, and Toutle Lake High Schools and look forward to more connections in the future!

MEET OUR STAFF!

From left to right:

Maurice Frank (Restoration Coordinator)

Shauna Hanisch-Kirkbride (Managing Director)

Chelsey Pacanins (Restoration Assistant)

Brice Crayne (Project Manager)

Brice and Maurice celebrated 4 years with LCFEG this spring! In May, Chelsey joined us as a summer intern to help keep our plants healthy. She did a great job and and we kept her on as a part time assistant while she finishes up her final year at WSU-Vancouver. Shauna reached her one year anniversary as managing director in August. She brought with her a diverse background in ecology, public policy, and education. We all look forward to continuing to improve salmon habitat in southwest Washington!

WE RAISE PLANTS!

Did you know LCFEG has three plant nurseries where we raise plants for our restoration projects? We grow everything from Western Red Cedar to Pacific Ninebark. This summer, our restoration assistant, Chelsey, worked with an intern from Camas High School, Emma McBride, to test different treatments (compost tea and mycorrhizal fungi) to see if they influenced plant growth. Emma collected and analyzed data and will present her findings in her senior research project!

2019 CONSTRUCTION COMPLETED

Our summer construction focused on restoration efforts on the Coweeman and South Fork Toutle River watersheds at Baird and Harrington Creeks.  Both projects aim to enhance and restore instream and riparian habitat for the benefit of Chinook, coho, and steelhead. For more info on these projects you can visit the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) PRISM website at: https://secure.rco.wa.gov/prism/search/ProjectSearch.aspx.  Now it's full steam ahead on nutrient enhancement!
