February Mini Blog

In the month of February, we acknowledge many observances, one of those being Black History Month. We would not be where we are today as an American society without the amazing contributions of Black Americans, despite the many odds against them.

Thought of the Month

This month I am reminded of the importance of leading all of my therapy sessions with a trauma-informed lens. Unfortunately, our Black community has experienced many traumas for living with the skin color they were born into. Because of this, it is paramount that we acknowledge this as it relates to our therapy. Let's all take the time to be intentional that we not only show acknowledgment of cultural issues, but also create space for safety, trust empowerment, and choice for our students, clients, and patients.

Observances This Month

Week of February 17-NATIONAL RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS DAY

February 17--NATIONAL CAREGIVERS DAY

National Caregivers Day on the third Friday in February honors the health care professionals across the country providing long-term and hospice care.

February 20- NATIONAL LEADERSHIP DAY

National Leadership Day is set aside to acknowledge the power of leadership. Every year, on February 20th, we recognize the impact that leaders make in people’s lives as they seek to develop themselves and others.

Functional Therapy Idea:

Week of February 17-National Random Acts of Kindness Day ( 2/17)

  • Intro: Introduce the idea of "random acts of kindness" during therapy sessions

  • Dive in: Incorporate a literacy-based activity and/or watch a relevant YouTube video to build background knowledge

  • Going Deeper: Who? What? Why? Discuss who might benefit from a random act of kindness. What does that random act of kindness look like? Why would this person benefit from this random act of kindness?

(Optional: plan a random act of kindness to carry out)

As always,

Take care.

Be well.
