Can you believe we are moving towards Christmas?
I was in Cyprus a few weeks ago and enjoying some late Autumn sunshine. If you get the chance, go. It's a fascinating island, with fantastic food and also has a very friendly vibe.
Its (complicated) history is also interesting.
But here we are now, moving into winter and with the potential for cold and snow to come.
Plus ça change.
I wrote earlier this month about the benefits of lifting weights (and engaging in resistance training) as people move into their later years. This blog post is based on research by the University of Iowa, which followed its subjects over the course of a decade, and strongly suggests that such training builds strength and resilience, as well as helps people enjoy a long and meaningful life.
Sometimes the benefits of regular training can be focused on the here and now, with an emphasis on the visual over health benefits. Of course, there is a discussion around exercise about its health benefits, but not enough attention is paid, I think, to how regular, challenging exercise can build happiness and contentment.
Being mobile, strong and energetic makes life worth living. It opens opportunities to those who invest their time in so exercising. It liberates the individual and protects him or her from weakness and potential illness.
Whatever your age, exercise leading to physical and mental fitness, is worth the investment. So, make that investment and reap its rewards as the years go by.
