 Navigating Art

 A Stride Arts Education Series

Attend art lectures and workshops at the gallery taught by distinguished artists

We are excited to announce the start of an art education series at Stride Arts called Navigating Art. Starting on November 17, 2021. We will offer 1-hour lectures on Wednesday nights and 2-hours art workshops on Saturday afternoons. These lectures and workshops will teach a variety of subjects in art history and give you an opportunity learn to produce different styles of art yourself with the guidance of a professional artist. You will receive information about this through our e-newsletter. We are beyond thrilled that Ms. Michelle Platnik will be leading the start of this series. She is not only an accomplished artist but also a passionate and experienced educator who cares deeply about sharing her wealth of knowledge in art history and practice.

About Navigating Art

Join us every other Wednesday night for a presentation on an art historical topic, chosen by artist, Michelle Palatnik. To further explore the ideas presented in the lecture in a more hands on way, Michelle will be offering workshops the following Saturday afternoon. No longer just the spectator, experience art from inside the creative process. Each workshop day will include technical demonstrations with guidance and instruction as you try techniques for yourself.

Walk away with new skills, knowledge, and artwork made by you! Materials can be purchased on site. You only need to bring enthusiasm and an open mind! At the end of each workshop, your work may be included as part of a group critique with other participants.

About Lecture 1 & Workshop 1

The human figure has been depicted since the dawn of man. Together, let's travel through time to explore how and why our image has changed. What drives our need for figuration? Why are we so moved by this form of expression and its visual representation? Where is the tradition headed next?

In Saturday's workshop, see for yourself what it's like to carve the human form onto paper. Roll up your sleeves for a great time!

From the Teaching Artist

Michelle Platnik

As an artist myself, I am deeply interested in the connections between seemingly separate disciplines. In the upcoming lecture series, I will be sharing my observations with you about different modes of expression and discovery. Instead of isolating specific moments from history, we will draw conclusions from across the timeline and uncover relationships and patterns that exist beyond the surface.

Art is vast with many styles and movements. These lectures are meant to help you understand what you see in museums and galleries, and give you new ways of looking at art.  We hope to inspire original thought and expose you to ideas and artists you haven't heard of.

Our first lecture will examine the representation of the human figure and how and why it has changed over time.  Our accompanying workshop will be a fun opportunity to try your hand at drawing the figure for yourself! I will be there to demonstrate many techniques and give you simple ways of translating what you see on paper.
