July News 2024

Serving up all our latest updates!

ACES AND PLACES

• The very biggest of congratulations to Andrew Jones who bought little Alexandra into the world last month. A budding tennis champ in the making, for sure!

• As is tradition amongst tennis tragics, we have had plenty of members chasing the sun during the rainy season: safe travels and have a blast Peter and Alis Woods, Nic and Helen de Wolf, and Trish and Dick Haffenden who are all in Broome lapping up the heat, Bob Wegner is sailing around the Whitsundays and John Pritchard is off in the bush on a mining exploration trip. Welcome back to Dave Ford who just spent a month travelling around Europe and the US with his family, Mike McLean who was partying it up in Bali with family, Pari Chandra and Brenton Woods who turned a work trip into some sightseeing fun in France and Switzerland while Jaiden Chandra lived it up in Singapore, Una Phelan who copped a bout of gastro but still had fun in Thailand and Bruce Long and Ian Seymour returning from family visits in Victoria and NSW. Jodie Everett (our resident Travel Agent and Club Sponsor) has just spent a month travelling around Italy checking out the sights, trekking the Cinque Terre, cooking up a storm and relaxing on a yoga retreat in Lucca. Hit her up if you're in the market for some travel adventures! April Jolly had a fun time in Europe, even making the local news after snagging a selfie with Perth Spud King Tony Galati in front of the Duomo di Milano in Milan!

• A big thankyou to the City of South Perth for awarding us with Community Funding Grant! The money has gone towards a few much-needed upgrades including a new key and lock system for the clubhouse, window tinting, blinds and new benches in the office, some outdoor awnings and upgrades to our court lighting system.

• It was a drizzly old morning at Bunnings East Vic Park last week when Hensman took on the tongs for the fundraising sausage sizzle. Thanks to the fantastic team of Chris Neil, Chris Wilkinson, John Pritchard, Sam Meshal, Colin Napier, Anja Dokic and Conor Smith, we kept the locals warm and fed, with hotdogs for all!

• Club Sponsor Bax Chiropractic are moving! Dr Harry and the team are relocating from their old premises on Carr St to 72 Hensman Street. Pop in for a visit - now a healthy back is even closer (literally!).

• Speaking of Sponsors, if you didn't get a chance to make use of On The Green's special Hensman Members offer of 2 free Reformer Pilates classes in June, they have extended their offer until the end of August! Warm up those winter aches with some fantastic and fun functional exercise!

• Hensman podium-makers from a few of the recent tournaments:

J125 Mt Lawley Hardcourt Classic winners were Lucas McKenzie (BS U10 GB), Gabrielle Lombardi (GS U10 GB), Naomi-Mariana Vakadranu (GS U18), and Thien Le (BD U12); runners up Khristian Bacchelli-Khoo (BS U12), Paige Connolly (GS U10 GB), Audrina Marchesi-Nemeth (GS U12), Jovana Novakovic (GS U18) and Mayla Manoj and Chloe Tyers (GD U 14)!

Winners from the J125 Open and Junior event: Jaun Yum (WD OS) and Vienna Torres (GD U12).

And the runners up: Brendan Jayaprakash (MS OS), Aedan Hoh (BS U10 GB) - retired due to illness in the final, Jason Howard (BD U10 GB) and Jovana Novakovic and Naomi-Mariana Vakadranu (WD OS).

And the Premier J250 Perth WA Junior Open winners: Keisuke Kogo (BS U14), Dustin Clegg and Keisuke Kogo (BD U14), Benita Vinciguerra (GD U12), Addison Franklin (GD U14) and Naomi-Mariana Vakadranu (GD U16). Runners up included: Veronica Lombardi and Audrina Marchesi-Nemeth (GD U12) and Zayah Baker (GD U16).

• Sending our best wishes to two of our Wednesday Men's Shed boys - Graham Walker who is recovering from a knee reconstruction and Doug Webster who is on the mend from a leg injury. Both are recovering well and we can't wait to have you back on the courts, boys!

An Ode to Tennis, by Phil Vincent

O tennis
O tennis
Sport sublime,
One plays the game best when one is in one’s prime.
As one gets older, one may fall on one’s arse,
So it’s far better then,

to play it on grass.

MEMBER PROFILE

UNA PHELAN

I'm a relatively recent tennis tragic. I just started to learn the game (properly) in 2021. I now play league Thursday nights and have also been spotted doing cardio, mid-week ladies group sessions, social tennis, and doubles' strategy classes. I was fortunate to recently accept the position of Club Administrator at HPTC (job description: "you just need to take the minutes" thanks Anna, haha).

I was born in Kilkenny (yes! the beer); I’m one of six kids and my childhood was pretty free-range: brought up in the Irish countryside with a lot of sport and music thrown in.

I studied Natural Science at Trinity College Dublin, topped off with a Masters degree from Queen's Belfast during the Northern Ireland ceasefire years.

I’ve won All-Ireland medals in athletics (who knew, my physique is a give away though) and bored the socks off many an audience playing in orchestras and bands during my school days. My favourite sport is my local game of hurling. If you’ve ever seen it played you will understand why I'm not afraid of a tennis ball!

I played centre-back for Trinity University Ladies Football Club (the best years!!). The same year I was thrown over the handlebars of a bicycle and knocked out my two front teeth amongst other injuries - not a highlight.

Tennis was not a thing back in Catholic Ireland growing up. I had more chance of becoming an astronaut. The annual dusting-off of rackets only came during Wimbledon when we’d tie blue baling twine between two kitchen chairs on our front lawn to create a tennis court!

I worked in the consulting engineering industry in London and Dublin before moving to windy Perth with only a backpack to sail and windsurf. I swore I would also learn to play tennis but a long standing knee injury convinced me otherwise. Finally, twenty years later it was to be when COVID hit. I had failed miserably to extract any tips from my then 12 year old son who had just started taking lessons with Conor. Frustrated, I took matters into my own hands (it’s a habit) and started lessons with the best kids’ coach I knew.  Simultaneously, we formed fun Wed/Fri group classes with similar minded tennis women who hadn’t picked up rackets in years and had way more talent than me.

Just two years later our brand new (extremely competitive) Doubles League team was formed. Our reputation: a team that never gave up!

In our inaugural season I can proudly say we won our first League title by just one game. As karma would have it we lost our second final last summer by just two games. What will next summer bring?

When I'm not at the Club I work as a Study Manager -  managing multi-disciplinary projects in the resources and renewables industry. Up until recently I also ran my own business helping clients create healthy homes - founded through desperation after suffering chronic sleep deprivation when my first born had years of unexplained night terrors. Said 15 year old definitely no longer has sleep problems.

Both my kids also play tennis at Hensman. Thankfully, we live only a stone's throw from the Club. We have a very well behaved spoodle Reggie, who looks more like a lamb and never digs holes, and a pet rabbit. Unfortunately the stick insects died.

I really hope that through Hensman we can inspire many more women to find time for themselves after selflessly giving so many years (and sleepless nights) away to others, and most importantly have lots of fun doing it.
