Career 2.0 Launch! 🎶

In which Nori quits her tech job and reboots her singing mailing list.

Hello friends near and far, new and old!

Some of you subscribed directly to this list through my website; others of you joined my ancient Mailman mailing list ("choral.spam") from 10+ years ago. I've just merged these two lists and will be using this one. If it's been a hot minute and you've lost interest in random missives about my singing, I promise I won't be offended if you unsubscribe (link at bottom). 🙂 If you'd like to hear more, though, read on...

What's new?

Well... a lot.

Yesterday was my 18-year anniversary at Google. It was also my last day at Google. While distributed system reliability and engineering management were pretty fun and engaging for a good long while, they've never been my passion. So, after a good long run, it's finally time for me to pursue what I've pretty much always wanted to do: Make music.

Career 2.0 starts today! After years of singing on the side, it's now my main gig. You're looking at Seattle's newest professional mezzo-soprano. 😀

I've got lots of stuff in the works, and have already been singing a lot. I also made a website (pretty amazing how far DIY website creation has come since I worked on it 16 years ago!), a fancy new professional Instagram account, and will be sending out occasional updates like this via email when there's new stuff afoot.

While I've got a lot going on, the most fun one is my choir's upcoming gala event, this Saturday evening (May 20). It's your standard sort of party / entertainment format, with a raise-the-paddle moment to support the choir (no live auction; that's all online). The theme is "A Little Night Music"; correspondingly, there will be an abridged version of Sondheim's musical of the same name. This is the fun part -- we've enlisted cast members from the 5th Avenue Theater to sing the main roles, and I've got a bit part, which has been just delightful in rehearsals so far. Also, members of the choir (including yours truly) are performing Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes, and members of the orchestra will do Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Tickets are $50/pop, and food and drink are included. It should be a fun evening!

That's it for now :)

Thanks for reading, folks. I'm so thrilled to be in a position to leave tech and pursue music just because it makes me happy, which it really, really does. This wouldn't be possible without the love and support of my husband, to whom I am hopefully showing up these days as a much happier, and much less stressed-out, wife and co-parent. 💕 I can't wait to hear from those of you I haven't spoken with in years -- reply to this email and let me know how you're doing, what you're up to, and what's new in the 15 years since I originally started the choral.spam@ mailing list!

Hope you're all thriving. I know I am.

Love and music,

-Nori
