“A sailing program serving Pittsburgh area high school students and others”
NEWSLETTER AT A GLANCE:We're pleased to announce a new PPSL sponsor, UPMC. Rain and thunderstorms that seemed to happen on Thursdays and Saturdays (our sailing days) have finally abated giving PPSL sailors more sailing opportunities to increase their skill level.
Several of our sailors received the first of three PPSL sailboat skill pins.
Safety first! Due to increasing weekday river use, we've adjusted our sailing area.
PPSL has received its first dedicated contribution. A local subscriber made a contribution to PPSL as a birthday gift.
Please pass along our registration information to Pittsburgh area high school students (rising 9th to 12th graders) who would like to give sailing a try. We welcome the opportunity to work with students who have no prior sailing experience (registration page).
Our contributors put "The Wind in our Sails". Please see the contribution links at the bottom of this newsletter and consider making a donation to support high school sailing in Pittsburgh. And also check out the link below for a video on the PPSL sailing program.
PPSL sailors, receive the first of three sailboat skill level pins
PPSL sailors Silas, Eva and Katerina proudly the pins on their PPSL hats designating that they are now sailing without an instructor on board.
Up to three sailing skill pins are awarded for sailing skill levels including; sailing without an instructor on board, US Sailing Small Boat certification and sailboat racing. All three sailors are now working on the skill list in the US Sailing Association's small boat sailing certification "Red Book". And racing practice sessions aren't far behind.
Our other sailors continue to make great progress. We work with every sailor to help them learn at their own pace.
Safety First! Weekday sailing area adjusted based on increased river traffic
During our Thursday sailing sessions, we have seen an uptick of river traffic and boat speed, including more jet skis.
To ensure safety for our sailors, we are now limiting the sailing area for our Thursday afternoon sailing session to the Northshore area outside the navigation channel of the Allegheny River. A weekend no-wake slow speed restriction for the three rivers near the Point of Pittsburgh is in place during our Saturday morning sailing session.
The revised weekday sail area has adequate room for our sailors to work on essential sailing skills.
UPMC becomes PPSL sponsor
We are pleased to announce that UPMC is the latest Point of Pittsburgh Sailing League sponsor. PPSL received support through the UPMC Center for Engagement and Inclusion.
David Bubas, Senior Director, Center for Engagement and Inclusion UPMC said, "We greatly appreciate the opportunity to support Point of Pittsburgh Sailing League's high school sailing program. This is a new and exciting intiative for Pittsburgh area high school students, our region and UPMC."
A UPMC banner will be a great addition our sailing platform, located at the amphitheater next to Acrisure Stadium and Carnegie Science Center.
