Hi there!

Welcome to this week's edition of the EVolve Houston's newsletter. Hope you all had a Happy Halloween! We are excited to share some *spooky* developments in the EV industry, as well as what we've been up to.

IN THIS NEWSLETTER

SUMMARY OF INDUSTRY HIGHLIGHTS

  • "The times they are a changin." Electric car sales have now surpassed stick shift sales in the U.S.
  • New frontiers in EV technology. Leading minds in the e-mobility and battery industries are breaking ground in battery capabilities. The result -- rapidly growing optimism over electrified transportation.
  • Drivers won't need to wait long to see these breakthroughs at work, as car makers continue to scale their EV programs. Volkswagen, who continues to push its ambitious emissions reductions plan in the shadow of "Dieselgate," joins the pack of companies announcing new EV models during this second half of the year. Orange EV, a recently founded eTruck manufacturer, announces huge plans to scale in the less-explored freight transportation industry (hint: you can learn all about it at EVolve Houston's Fleet Electrification Workshop around the corner...)

INDUSTRY HIGHLIGHTS: WEEK OF 11/1

Electric car sales have now surpassed stick shift sales in the U.S. In the third-quarter of 2019, it appeared that just 1.1 percent of buyers wanted manuals, and according to J.D. Power stats nearly 2 percent are seeking EVs. Bob Dylan might want to trade in his Escalade. Read more at Driving Magazine.

New frontiers in EV technology.

  • Dr. M. Stanley Whittingham, the Nobel Prize winning scientist whose research is critical in developing lithium-ion batteries says the ubiquitous technology that energizes iPhones and Teslas is poised to become more powerful and less expensive – a key development for unlocking the mainstream adoption of electric vehicles and home-energy storage units. Read more at Bloomberg.
  • A technological breakthrough has been made that could cut EV charging time by more than half to as low as 10 minutes. This technology heats components without causing degradation and tested as stable while in use. Read more at Science Magazine.

Car makers continue to scale their EV programs.

  • Volkswagen is planning on ramping up their EV production to 1 million units per year by 2022. In their attempt to rival Tesla in production, Volkswagen will also build several factories in China to reach a production goal of 22 million units by 2028. Read more at Reuters. Volkswagen also joined the ranks of car makers by hinting the reveal of a new all-electric model. Read more at Electrik.co.
  • Orange EV, an electric vehicle OEM, announced a four-year plan to create a second facility that will increase its capacity by five times. As the sole manufacturer of class 8 EV trucks, Orange EV is aiming to keep up with growing demand. Read more at ThomasNet.
