Winter has arrived!
This has been the coldest and wettest week of the season, which means that the last remaining summer crops are finally finished. Our high tunnel greenhouse has been the last refuge for our heat-loving crops like tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. They’ve survived longer than expected, but the thin tunnel walls aren’t insulated enough to keep them alive any longer. Some of the fruits that are already set might ripen, but most of the apical meristems have died, so the plants can’t keep growing.
We’re eager to get production of these crops again, so we’ve just planted a new tray of tomato seeds as an experiment. They’ll be germinated under lights inside, and then up-potted before they are planted into the high tunnel in a couple months. This has a chance of failure if we get late frosts, but if it works out, we’ll be able to offer tomatoes about two months earlier than we were able to last season. We’ll be doing staggered plantings of peppers, cucumbers, and the rest of the warm season crops soon too, so look forward to seeing them this Spring!
