Willamette Seasons

April 2021

A Leaf from Our Playbook

April Turf

Grass just loves April, producing lots of lush green, healthy growth. Our mowing team and equipment are tuned up, sharpened and ready to roll. We will be on your property mowing regularly now that the season has begun in earnest.

The soil still has moisture in it, but the sun is out, and there has not been significant rain in several weeks. Lawns will need water soon to stay green. Our irrigation team is working hard to get all systems turned on.

This is a great moment to talk with your Account Manager and walk your site. Enjoy the warm sunshine and green grass while you chat about site issues. Ask about fertilizer schedules if they are part of your contract. Get fertilizer arranged if we bill you by the visit. Get seasonal color lined up with us and ready to go. Talk about any plants that need replacement, areas that need renewal, or other landscape projects that need an estimate.

Dog Parks All the Rage

A dog park is a terrific amenity to add to an apartment facility. Thompson Landscape has put in several during the last year. Your dog owning residents would be grateful to have a safe-space at home for their dogs to be off-leash and exercise. Plus, a dog park is a great selling feature for prospective tenants. We can talk you through various features and get you an estimate.

Mike Wage: Featured Employee

About a year ago we became a Community Employment Partner with Pearl Buck Center. That relationship brought us a young man named Mike Wage. Landscape work started for Mike when he noticed a woman doing landscape maintenance outside his group home. Mike decided to go help. Holly Holten, Pearl Buck Center Job Developer, heard about Mike’s effort and videotaped him.

She approached Thompson’s about taking Mike on as an employee. We did, and now enjoy seeing Mike most days of the week. Mike is dispatched to jobs that need special attention and care, such as pruning roses, deadheading flowers, and hand weeding. Mike loves being outside, seeing new places and (especially) the power tools like mowers and blowers.

Azalea Lace Bug: There is an azalea and rhododendron pest that is causing a lot of problems in our PNW gardens called the azalea lace bug. It feeds on the leaves of azaleas and rhododendrons causing stippled damage that can be severe.  Drought stressed and sun grown plants are most susceptible. A limited number of varieties are resistant. If you are seeing damage like this on your  rhododendrons or azaleas, give us a call. We’ll come take a look. Both synthetic and natural controls are available. This looks like a pest that’s here to stay.

Oregon State Extension has a great bulletin online giving more detailed information at: http://oregonstate.edu/dept/nurspest/Azalea_lacebug.pdf
