Newton, Frank Norfleet, Glenn North, Laura Nugent, Charly Palmer, Michael Patton, Jason Piggie, Robert Quackenbush, Sonié Joi Ruffin curator, Sonia Sanchez, Michael Schonhoff, Keith Shepherd, Harold Smith, David Stevens, Michael Toombs and Arzie Umali Cultural Legacy When we examine the current social, political, and racial climate we have to ask ourselves, "Have things really changed? Have we come together or are we allowing the age-old 'business as usual' systematic powers perpetuate the status quo? What role does art and/or the artist play in moving toward positive social change? What is our individual/social/cultural birthright? Is it being dismantled? In a system that claims to be 'of the people, by the people, and for the people,' which people are we talking about?" What's Going On? This exhibition poses these questions and seeks to explore how art, in many facets, is being utilized to show us who we are and what we are doing in relation to the current cultural landscape. It is, in essence, a visual, conversation that will possibly lead toward discovering the answers or realizing your real truth. View More Exhibition Images KC Studio Magazine Article by James Martin |

NUANCE Recent Paintings by Sherry Cromwell-Lacy November 2 - January 26, 2019 Front Gallery “Nuance – Recent Paintings by Sherry Cromwell-Lacy,” is the first one-person exhibition for the well-known art curator, and former Director of Exhibitions at Kansas City Art Institute from 1972 – 1994. While Cromwell-Lacy is renowned for her cutting-edge contemporary shows and exhibitions of rare ethnographic art, few realize that throughout her career she has always been a practicing artist. Her abstract art works, in various scales, are as visually appealing as they are simultaneously elusive. Colors and forms shape-shift, appear and disappear, then effortlessly float to the surface. They embody the poetic, with references to landscape and an unabashed, if always delicate, ode to joy. Cromwell-Lacy’s sheer delight in painting is a tonic.

NATURAL SELECTION Recent Hand Cut Papers by Angie Pickman November 2, - December 1, 2018 Opie Gallery Angie Pickman, Lawrence, KS, is a nationally recognized cut paper artist that combines the art of traditional paper cutting with collage to create intricately detailed works of art and animations. She received her master’s degree in 2004 from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, which is where she first learned of the art of silhouette animation artist Lotte Reiniger (1899 – 1981). Her love of nature and the tranquility of the rural terrain, as well as Reiniger’s style and technique, inspired Pickman to set off on the artistic path that she continues today. She exhibits at galleries and art fairs nationally, does illustration, animation and design work, conducts public presentations on her art, and teaches various art classes and workshops. Most recently, her work has been featured in Midwest Living and Martha Stewart Living magazines, and her animation work premiered on PBS in the summer of 2016 in the documentary “Daughters of the Forest”. “I began cutting paper in 2003 after seeing “The Adventures of Prince Achmed” – a cut paper stop-motion silhouette animation from 1926 by Lotte Reiniger. I had always wanted to be “an artist” – I knew from a very young age that it was my life calling, but it took me a long time to figure out in which medium this would manifest itself. The traditional forms taught in school never felt quite right, but when I saw Lotte’s work, something clicked.” Join us for a FREE kids event on Nov 17th from 11:30am - 1:30pm Meet Angie Pickman, along with other local authors and illustrators! |

INTERSECTIONS Courtney Starrett and Susan Reiser October 5 - December 1, 2018 Back Gallery Intersections invites viewers to connect with light, color, shadows, form, space, and place. Viewers manipulate red, green, and blue lights to produce multi-colored shadows and reflections. The forms are inspired by the architecture of Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, NY), and the cut pattern is visualized from ten years of demographic Vassar data. This installation exemplifies some of the myriad intersections between art and science: color theory, design, and fabrication.
Intersections is the first full-blown collaborative art effort between Starrett and Reiser, created while in residence at Vassar College. The intention of the work is to visually and conceptually bridge the arts and sciences while using the picturesque campus as source material. Starrett and Reiser spent two months working at Vassar within the Creative Arts Across Disciplines program. ...read more... |
